Microdosing poison ivy
    #26082015 -

I've always been sensitive to poison ivy and as mindful as I am in nature I seem to get some about once a year. It's a pain in the ass. I have 1 friend who has, and another friend who knows a few people who have, microdosed on poison ivy and gradually became immune to it. Sounds crazy but it works. Sort of like homeopathy but preventative. I looked online and couldn't find any useful info or feedback about it.

Several days ago using gloves I harvested some by the river and kept in inside of the gloves I used to harvest it. Half of what I harvested was new leaves (lower urushiol content) and half of what I harvested was older leaves (higher urushiol content). I brought it home and dried it out and starting yesterday I used scissors to snip off about 1/4 of a dried new leaf and put it inside a veg capsule, said a prayer, talked to the poison ivy, then swallowed it. I didn't die! Haha, nor did I have any bad reaction whatsoever. So for the next few days I'll keep ingesting about 1/4 of a new leaf once a day and gradually up the dose until I eat a whole leaf every day. This fall I will rub some poison ivy on me to see if it worked. It would be nice to no longer have to deal with poison ivy rash. I'm pretty excited about this! I do not recommend any one else does it, just sharing my strange ideas and behaviors  :naughty:   :crazy2:

I live in the western US, we have poison oak, which is similar in action and effect to poison ivy, and I am really badly allergic.  So, I am quite interested to see how this works out. Good luck, keep me posted pls

urushiol causes a local allergic reaction on skin. I don't see how eating it will help. And in the case of urushiol, exposure tends to cause sensitization rather than desensitization.

I respect your scientific interpretation of it Bod but it does not align with one of my close friends experience of becoming immune to it immediately after eating it for a few weeks in a row and previously being extremely sensitive to it his whole life. One of my other friends knows multiple people who have done it successfully

I've been eating poison ivy for at least a 1/4 century and only recently moved up to the mature leaves. The three little red leaves once a day in the month of may are my go to.

About exposure causing sensitization, I was a lot more sensitive to it when I was younger and after being exposed to it a lot over the course of my life I have become much less sensitive to it

Yeah, it was an occupational hazard and I read about the cure in Mother Earth News. I would still get the rash upon contact but not as severe, I wouldn't test it by rubbing leaves on yourself if I were you.

Interesting good call thanks. Although I'll probably gradually up the dose and then test it in a small area by rubbing some on myself hehe. I'll have to think where I won't mind likely having an itchy rash

it builds resistance.  you can eat small portions of leaves, slowly increasing the dosage.  as well, the natives would make a tea from the berries and/or roots to build resistance.

i've known quite  a few people that have done these methods with great success.

Awesome good to know. I have a few folks in my life who did this with great success. I'm on my 4th day of microdosing with it and haven't had any bad reaction. I'm putting like a 1/4 of a new small leaf in a capsule once a day. I'll up it to 1/2 a leaf soon and keep increasing the dose until I'm up to a whole older leaf once a day. This is fun. I hope I become less sensitive to it

Interesting. I hope it works for you. I'm going to follow because my girl is crazy allergic and I am not so going foraging together can get problematic when I walk through a field of poison ivy without even seeing its there and having her follow me

I used to be allergic. When I was about 15 I went fishing along a stream and didn't realize I was basically wading through poison ivy. I got covered head to toe. Had to lay on the floor for 3 days covered in medicated towels that was some kind of prescription. Ever since then I've never gotten it again. I can pull out vines with bare hands and don't get a spot. I have no idea how or why getting such a severe case would cure me of the allergy but it did. PS. I am not recommending this! It totally sucked. Just wanted to share my experience.

It sort of makes sense that you became less sensitive to it after the crazy exposure you got that time. I and many others have become less sensitive to it over the course of our lives. It's the theory behind microdosing it, that exposure reduces sensitivity. I'll keep sharing throughout the year as my journey continues. This fall I'm going to rub some on my arm and see if microdosing worked.

You got me thinking. Like ten years ago before I became less sensitive to it I ran into some unknowingly at night time and got it all over my body. It was the worse case I'd ever gotten in my life. Since then I have been less allergic to it. I hadn't connected those 2 until now. Thanks

you have to remember, those animals have some degree of thick coat, compared to humans, and that coat has a layer of oil which would most likely prevent the urushiol from ever reaching the skin.  now the ears, eyes, and snouts could possibly be points of exposure, but it's not something i've ever noticed.

i mostly only react when i'm already cut up and have lots of contact with the oak on those cuts.  even getting poked by a broken stem won't cause me to react unless the skin is broken/punctured by it.

i've made a lot of money over the years ripping out hundreds, if not thousands of pounds of poison oak, both out of the ground by the roots (which often run 25-50' in all directions) and yanking the shit, including old-growth P.O., out of trees and their canopies.

Yeah I hung out around a fire when I was a lot younger when some folks were burning the shit and I didn't know it. Thankfully I didn't inhale enough to have respiratory problems but I had some solid rashes, not even bumps just pure thick patches of poison ivy it was wicked

as a crew, we have to be very careful to remove P.O. from brush, especially when working near roadways.

however, burning PO out in the open, especially just a few sprigs here and there, is NOT going to hurt someone unless they are intentionally breathing in the smoke right next to the fire.

on side jobs, i burn PO all the time, cause it doesn't affect me unless i have days of exposure to the smoke.  burning it in a wood-stove and opening the door (or closing after just placing a log in) is how most people get hit with it via the smoke.

as always, individual sensitivity levels ultimately dictate the degree of response.

now the real lovely things about urushiol is the orgasmic "pain" that comes from exposing the PO "wound" to HOT HOT water.  i do it intentionally when i get it real bad (even though it prolongs the sores a few days) because of how amazing it feels.  i've fallen to my knees shaking (almost equivalent to an orgasm, except i can feel the delight ALL throughout my body, inside and out); it's bliss.

FYI, do NOT expose a fresh urushiol wound to warm water, as it allows the oil to soak in.  cold water and soap is the way to remove the oil from skin.  the sooner you can get to cold water, the less effect the urushiol will have.

My wife is so allergic, that just touching a mango will get her to break out... I've wondered if you could use this method to build an immunity to it, but I am leery. People do it with peanuts and have success, so who knows.
My main concern for ingesting it would be your GI tract getting fed up with a constant irritant and triggering an anaphylactic response... if that happens you might be a dead leaf eater if you dont have an epi-pen.

I have wondered if you could gather alot of it, then dry it and grind into a powder. This would give you a consistent stock to dose from (much like we all know how to do:mushroom2:). Then take a very small amount like .001 grams per liter of water or carrier oil and apply it to the skin... then keep increasing the concentration until you find the threshold (unfortunately you would have to at least once, induce a reaction). once the threshold is found, reduce the concentration and guesstimate a protocol. On a decided date try the threshold dose again. Document it all, if found to have a positive affect. Then graph dates, dosage, and the new threshold levels. With that info you could theorize the optimal protocol I.E. apply daily and double dosage monthly or what have you.

To spare my wife, I wanted to get some bald mice, lather them up, and get them right itchy but that demon oil looks to only have taste for human skinbags. I asked my wife to be my cute little test rat...I kinda got the vibe that she'd rather eat a dog turd.

either why keep us in the loop with your trial. good luck!

Huh, I'm finding this all pretty interesting. Especially the obstinacy due to lack of research. In 1940 there was a clinical test done for treating extreme poison ivy allergies. The link is below. It's a long read. I did read it all and the methods are well described. I'll sum up for you though. He used an extract diluted in corn oil in gel capsules. There are different dosing schedules described and over various periods of time. He also tried muscular injection. Like a vaccine. That didn't work. The oral therapy did. The number of people treated is too small to be definitive in my opinion, but he trusted it enough to treat both his sons.

Here's a quote from the conclusion "Some forty selected ivy-sensitive persons have, to date, been treated by either shock or prolonged fractional oral therapy. Reduction in skin sensitivity, as shown by quantitative patch test,s, has occurred in all volunteers thus treated."

https://www.jacionline.org/article/S0021-8707(41)80009-4/pdf

Personally, I wouldn't follow his methods as many doses caused poison ivy on the ass and some other really crazy stuff at higher doses. The low dose method didn't have many side effects

Now that I've gotten interested in this subject more because, as I said, my girlfriend has severe reactions, I've found other studies that back up oral treatment. Here's another one:

https://www.jacionline.org/article/0021-8707(59)90082-6/pdf

And some quotes...

"The bencficial therapeutic effects of oral ivy dates back to the report of Dakin2 in 1829. Warren3 produced immunity by administering the extract orally in 1909. Schamberg4 was the first to popularize the ingestion of the ivy resin which he dissolved in alcohol. Shelmire” employed t,hc ivy resin in diluted corn oil and gave it by mouth in daily doses. There have been many reports6+’ since then on the efficacy of oral ivy therapy."

"The results tend to show that Aqua Ivy Tablets offer immunity against.
poison ivy dermatitis.. This conclusion appears warranted on the basis of
the double-blind, controlled study which gave statistically significant results, as well as the clinical study in which 88 per cent of men with a past history of poison ivy dermatitis, under conditions of heavy exposure, had no dermatitis at all."

That's not true Bod. on many levels. You can develop an immunity, as I did, after sever exposure. It's also not a poison, but many, many animals develop resistance to poisons. Not only can people develop resistance to poison but it even has a name. The practice is called Mithridatism and was very common in the past in rulers who feared assassination from poison.

Even the mithradatism article says it depends on how the substance works

It is important to note that mithridatism is not effective against all types of poison (immunity generally is only possible with biologically complex types which the immune system can respond to) and, depending on the toxin, the practice can lead to the lethal accumulation of a poison in the body. Results depend on how each poison is processed by the body, ie, on how the toxic compound is metabolized or passed out of the body. In some cases, it is possible to build up tolerance against specific non-biological poisons. This involves conditioning the liver to produce more of the particular enzymes that metabolize these poisons (for example alcohol).[7] However, this method (metabolic tolerance) isn't very reliable as too much generally causes accumulation of the reduced toxicity compound that the original poison was metabolized into, slowly damaging the liver. With alcohol this generally leads to conditions such as alcoholic fatty liver disease

Correct. and there are many poisonous substances that you definitely can not resist. Like say, mercury. It will accumulate and kill you. I was just pointing out that the sweeping statement of not being able to build resistance to poison is inaccurate. Especially relating to poison ivy.

I'd also guess a bunch of people died trying to build immunity to various poisons too ,lol

there's a guy i saw on viceland who apparently was obsessed with becoming a "snake man" so he acquired a collection of rare venomous snakes and would continuously inject himself with snake venom.

there were some pretty outrageous claims but it didnt kill him and he even seemed to cop a buzz from it in a lot of cases. think he also mentioned that he was part of some studies that were spurred as a result of these activities.

so technically it shouldn't exactly be not possible....humans are very adaptive and life uhh.. uhh.. finds a way lol

Poison ivy finds a way to kill people idiotic enough to eat it.

Awesome find man. Science should be a means of discovery not limitation. Interesting to me that since starting this discussion I keep finding more and more people who have themselves or know others who have had success with taking poison ivy internally to build immunity or resistance to it, and yet some have such an obstinate attitude towards it. Beginners mind is a precious thing

I have wondered if you could gather alot of it, then dry it and grind into a powder. This would give you a consistent stock to dose from (much like we all know how to do:mushroom2:).

I'm on day 6 of ingesting poison ivy in capsules. I upped my dose today to 1/2 of a dried new leaf from 1/4. I've been using the new emerging leaves because they have less urushiol on them compared to mature older leaves, and this is exactly what my friend did who had success taking it internally. I think from here forward I'll grind the rest down and weigh it out into capsules for more measured and consistent dosing. It makes more sense :dancer:

Everyone please remember this is a harm reduction website and this specific forum section does not allow flaming people.  Please keep the pseudoscience to a minimum and be careful.  Without much in the way of a REAL scientific study we don't want to encourage others to do something that may harm them.

I started this thread by saying I don't recommend others do this but I am simply creating a discussion and documenting my experience. Also psychedlic pupil linked two scientific studies that were done here https://www.jacionline.org/article/0021-8707(59)90082-6/pdf and here https://www.jacionline.org/article/S0021-8707(41)80009-4/pdf.

I am still taking it daily with no adverse reactions so far. I also just went camping in an area loaded with poison ivy, over the past 2 years camping at that spot I've always come back with at least a little bit of poison ivy except this time. I may have just successfully avoided it unlike the last 8 or 10 times, but maybe...

Both of those studies are super super old.  If modern medicine thought it could find a way to help people become immune to or mitigate the risk of getting hit with it, they would have tried to develop it already.  It would be worth a shitload of money to any number of companies out there not to mention people who are highly allergic.

Your methodology for testing is also very very flawed.

Madfreeze, I'm in complete agreement about not encouraging people. I don't think I've done that. AT least I hope not. Sherlock had already said he was doing it and starting the discussion about it so I was genuinely curious and did some research on the topic. I did point out that one of the studies had too small a test pool to be accurate in my opinion but the second linked study, although super old, as you say was done solidly with double blinds and a good size test pool. I also checked out many of the other studies cited. I don't think I said at any point. "Here's proof, do it" I was satisfying my own curiosity and sharing what I found.

As to why it hasn't been studied further. I'd guess a few reasons but mostly new ethics rules in scientific study. There are many, many test that are commonly used in psychology that were derived from studies done before modern ethics rules that are still used and valid. The reason they haven't been updated is because you can't still, like, lock people in a prison together and see if they kill eachother. Or in the one poison ivy case, "Whip" your nurse with poison ivy vines.

But on a similar subject, why were test into the benefits of mushrooms and lsd on psychological disorders stopped.... Why are we just now seeing new studies on the benefits of mushrooms and depression?

I honestly hope no one thinks I'm trying to encourage anyone to do anything by my posts here. I think I had made it clear that I was genuinely curios for my own reasons and sharing the info I had found. I admit I was not happy with the name calling and that it pushed me to do more research... but I'll take knowledge by whatever path so...

You haven't encouraged anybody to do anything. You, as I, are just pursuing curiosity. Good point about the protocols for testing, they have gotten more strict and don't allow for human studies the way they used to. And especially in the case of poison ivy since it has no known toxic effects on any animal, and therefore without being able to test it on humans in the ways shown in the studies you linked, there is not much room for any current scientific studies at least in the context we're discussing. I'll remind folks again I stated in my first post I DO NOT recommend others try this. As for the scientific legitimacy of my personal experiment of course it doesn't stand up to scientific scrutiny, nor does much of anything thats openly discussed on this website. I'm not about to setup a proper controlled, varied, in depth study of this. If the idea triggers people than just go read one of a hundred thousand other threads available here

My unscientific and dangerous experiment that I don't recommend others try worked. I seem to be immune to poison ivy now or at least very tolerant of it. In the past the least amount of exposure would lead to an itchy rash for 2 weeks. I touched it 4 or 5 times this summer and didn't get a rash at all. I'll be microdosing poison ivy using this method every spring from here forward. Cheers!

Personally I've eaten the little red leaves at the tip 'once a day in the month of may' for season long resistance. In 30 years I haven't experienced an episode of an "accumulative effect" so I'm inclined to believe that your source is mistaken.

OK, I admit that brushing the underside of your forearm with poison ivy will result in a mild irritation when taking the preventive medicine, and additional applications with the intent to force a reaction may result in just that, but on the whole in my experience the practice of micro dosing poison ivy is well worth the trouble for those of us who enjoy rolling in the weeds.
