Poison beer ?
    #7326122 -

Has anyone ever experienced a bad batch of beer ?, and knows how/why/if this happens.

I've had times where i've drank 7 cans and all the next day i've been incredibly hung over,, throwing up half the day...
I've had this twice with Stella Artois,, and i can normally drink alot more and be fine...

Maybe it's coincidence and i picked up a bug a few days before i drank,, but it felt very much like i'd been poisoned in a bad way by the booze.

How does this happen ?,, and if it does happen, does anybody know why ?

Something to do with the yeast, maybe?

"brewing beer is more or less a controlled infection" - some website I just googled

I don't know, "a bad batch" is quite a well know term around here.

I never did know exactly why a batch may be bad.

Thats weird, in the olden days we drank beer because it could kill
lots of the crap that was in the water, did this brew have a particular
odor, or anything out of the ordinary?

Maybe it has to do with the seven beers.

stella artois is kinda skunky anyways... maybe try some beer thats not so shitty .

Yes beer can go bad though, usually beer that you make is much more susceptible to contaminants, or spoiled yeast. This usually occurs when the yeast eats too much sugar, making the whole batch taste really cidery....

I honestly think you need to upgrade your selection of beers. Either find a brew it yourself place, an make your own beer (beer that does not contain preservatives), or buy higher quality beer (boddingtons, etc...) . Also make sure you take vitamins, and eat well if you drink often... its pretty obvious you drink a lot when you do drink. Make sure your body isn't being exhausted of its nutrients.

Stella has ups and downs,,, only reason we buy the beers we do is because they're on special offer..
I like grolsch,, then Carlsberg export,, but if you drink 5% plus beers regularly you take whatever's cheapest out of that range...

I've gotten sick from about 10 at a festival this summer, but i think i remember eating a jumbo hot dog with cheese and fried onions the night before so that could have been it. i threw up a couple of times the next morning but after a couple of bowls were passed around i was fine:tongue: weed surely is the miracle drug.

You probably got really dehydrated after all that is what gives you a hang-over. Try drinking water after or inbetween drinks.

Eh? Bacteria? We are talking about beer, not tequila.

> Odds are you're just not getting enough water and feeling very hungover.

My guess as well.

> Much more likely your body is reacting to high yeast intakes

Most commercial beers are pasteurized and filtered. Having tried to culture yeast from commercial beers, I can tell you that there isn't anything left alive in them, unless they messed up. (Yogurt and homebrew are a different story!)

One thing to remember, cheap alcohol will usually cause hangovers worse than expensive alcohol. The reason is simple. Cheap alcohol is cheap because it is produced quickly, thus it costs less to make. To produce it quickly, the fermentation process is allowed to get warmer than usual. Warm yeast produce ethanol faster, but produce more undesirable alcohols as well. These other alcohols produced by fast fermentation are a big part of the hangover picture.

i agree with others as it was prob just dehydration, however another possibility is that you could be allergic to beer or more specifically that kind of beer.

I brew quite a bit.

Actually, no pathogenic cultures can breed in beer. You will not get sick, and you will not be "poisoned". It's one of the amazingly nifty things about brewing beer. It's also the reason medieval folk drank ale, and not water; the stuff keeps. You cannot get sick from "too much yeast intake" from beer; the ethanol will affect you far more profoundly.

Bad beer, however, happens. It can be old, which will make it taste off...or sour. I disagree with what's posted above about "bad yeast"...yeast is yeast. Bacillus rot is about all that happens to beer, and it gives off a distinctly sick sweet smell and taste. I've received a few random bad bottles, but only about 3-4 out of mainstream breweries over a storied beer-drinking career.

It's worth noting that some beers, like the Belgian Lambic, draw off this. Lambics are intentionally soured, as is Guiness.

I remember hearing not too long ago that there were a bunch of Stella bottles that were contaminated in some way. Search around for that, because if I'm not mistaken, that side effects sound a lot like what you had happen.

Oh, it occurred to me when I was reading from my plants and society book last night, Seuss...yeast is not bacterial, it's a low-level plant form.

Yeasts are a growth form of eukaryotic microorganisms classified in the kingdom Fungi, with approximately 1,500 species described.[1] Most reproduce asexually by budding, although a few do by binary fission. Yeasts are unicellular, although some species with yeast forms may become multicellular through the formation of a string of connected budding cells known as pseudohyphae, or true hyphae as seen in most molds.[2] Yeast size can vary greatly depending on the species, typically measuring 3–4 µm in diameter, although some yeasts can reach over 40 µm.[3]

The yeast species Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been used in baking and fermenting alcoholic beverages for thousands of years. It is also extremely important as a model organism in modern cell biology research, and is the most thoroughly researched eukaryotic microorganism. Researchers can use it to gather information into the biology of the eukaryotic cell and ultimately human biology.[4] Other species of yeast, such as Candida albicans, are opportunistic pathogens and can cause infection in humans. Yeasts have recently been used to generate electricity in microbial fuel cells,[5] and produce ethanol for the biofuel industry.

Yeasts do not form a specific taxonomic or phylogenetic grouping. At present it is estimated that only 1% of all yeast species have been described.[6] The term "yeast" is often taken as a synonym for S. cerevisiae,[7] however the phylogenetic diversity of yeasts is shown by their placement in both divisions Ascomycota and Basidiomycota. The budding yeasts ("true yeasts") are classified in the order Saccharomycetales.[8]

i think that the industrially made beer (artificial and fast) is causing that problems as they are using now new methods to create it.

i live in slovakia and have drunk slovak, czech, german, netherlands, belgium and french beer.

the smallest hangover i get from belgium beer if its a small brand. i had also good experiences of czech beer of this kind.

the biggest hangover i get from big beer factories.

I heard recently about certain bottles of Stella being tampered with.

Something about them having a "dramatically higher amount of alcohol" than a normal bottle of beer.
Check it out online, it was not so long ago that I saw this.
