Microdosing poison ivy

I've always been sensitive to poison ivy and as mindful as I am in nature I seem to get some about once a year. It's a pain in the ass. I have 1 friend who has, and another friend who knows a few people who have, microdosed on poison ivy and gradually became immune to it. Sounds crazy but it works. Sort of like homeopathy but preventative. I looked online and couldn't find any useful info or feedback about it.

Several days ago using gloves I harvested some by the river and kept in inside of the gloves I used to harvest it. Half of what I harvested was new leaves (lower urushiol content) and half of what I harvested was older leaves (higher urushiol content). I brought it home and dried it out and starting yesterday I used scissors to snip off about 1/4 of a dried new leaf and put it inside a veg capsule, said a prayer, talked to the poison ivy, then swallowed it. I didn't die! Haha, nor did I have any bad reaction whatsoever. So for the next few days I'll keep ingesting about 1/4 of a new leaf once a day and gradually up the dose until I eat a whole leaf every day. This fall I will rub some poison ivy on me to see if it worked. It would be nice to no longer have to deal with poison ivy rash. I'm pretty excited about this! I do not recommend any one else does it, just sharing my strange ideas and behaviors  :naughty:  :weirdeyes:  :crazy2:

I live in the western US, we have poison oak, which is similar in action and effect to poison ivy, and I am really badly allergic.  So, I am quite interested to see how this works out. Good luck, keep me posted pls

urushiol causes a local allergic reaction on skin. I don't see how eating it will help. And in the case of urushiol, exposure tends to cause sensitization rather than desensitization.

I respect your scientific interpretation of it Bod but it does not align with one of my close friends experience of becoming immune to it immediately after eating it for a few weeks in a row and previously being extremely sensitive to it his whole life. One of my other friends knows multiple people who have done it successfully  :shrug:

I've been eating poison ivy for at least a 1/4 century and only recently moved up to the mature leaves. The three little red leaves once a day in the month of may are my go to.

About exposure causing sensitization, I was a lot more sensitive to it when I was younger and after being exposed to it a lot over the course of my life I have become much less sensitive to it

Yeah, it was an occupational hazard and I read about the cure in Mother Earth News. I would still get the rash upon contact but not as severe, I wouldn't test it by rubbing leaves on yourself if I were you.

Interesting good call thanks. Although I'll probably gradually up the dose and then test it in a small area by rubbing some on myself hehe. I'll have to think where I won't mind likely having an itchy rash

That's only when you want to break up with your girlfriend but don't have the courage to, don't say anything and just rub poison ivy on your balls everyday until she gets grossed out and leaves  :freewilly:

it builds resistance.  you can eat small portions of leaves, slowly increasing the dosage.  as well, the natives would make a tea from the berries and/or roots to build resistance.


i've known quite  a few people that have done these methods with great success.

Awesome good to know. I have a few folks in my life who did this with great success. I'm on my 4th day of microdosing with it and haven't had any bad reaction. I'm putting like a 1/4 of a new small leaf in a capsule once a day. I'll up it to 1/2 a leaf soon and keep increasing the dose until I'm up to a whole older leaf once a day. This is fun. I hope I become less sensitive to it

I find it interesting that poison ivy doesn't seem to negatively effect other creatures just humans, also interesting that it likes the edges of ecosystems. Like its trying to teach us something or keep us out

Interesting. I hope it works for you. I'm going to follow because my girl is crazy allergic and I am not so going foraging together can get problematic when I walk through a field of poison ivy without even seeing its there and having her follow me :smile:

I used to be allergic. When I was about 15 I went fishing along a stream and didn't realize I was basically wading through poison ivy. I got covered head to toe. Had to lay on the floor for 3 days covered in medicated towels that was some kind of prescription. Ever since then I've never gotten it again. I can pull out vines with bare hands and don't get a spot. I have no idea how or why getting such a severe case would cure me of the allergy but it did. PS. I am not recommending this! It totally sucked. Just wanted to share my experience.

It sort of makes sense that you became less sensitive to it after the crazy exposure you got that time. I and many others have become less sensitive to it over the course of our lives. It's the theory behind microdosing it, that exposure reduces sensitivity. I'll keep sharing throughout the year as my journey continues. This fall I'm going to rub some on my arm and see if microdosing worked.

You got me thinking. Like ten years ago before I became less sensitive to it I ran into some unknowingly at night time and got it all over my body. It was the worse case I'd ever gotten in my life. Since then I have been less allergic to it. I hadn't connected those 2 until now. Thanks

you have to remember, those animals have some degree of thick coat, compared to humans, and that coat has a layer of oil which would most likely prevent the urushiol from ever reaching the skin.  now the ears, eyes, and snouts could possibly be points of exposure, but it's not something i've ever noticed.


i mostly only react when i'm already cut up and have lots of contact with the oak on those cuts.  even getting poked by a broken stem won't cause me to react unless the skin is broken/punctured by it.

i've made a lot of money over the years ripping out hundreds, if not thousands of pounds of poison oak, both out of the ground by the roots (which often run 25-50' in all directions) and yanking the shit, including old-growth P.O., out of trees and their canopies.
