BRF cake in SGFC for two months; turned golden/brown, 0 pins or fruiting

Hello,

I have a single cake that has been sitting in a properly built SGFC for close to two months. It's ridiculous; I have had time to inoculate new cakes, dunk them, and put them into another SGFC during that time, and they're now pinning (thank christ for that; at least my second attempt is working).

The cake was consolidated before birthing (~10 days). Now, that cake has turned golden/brownish; I suspected contam but there is zero smell. The cake smell mushroomy just like after birth and that's all. It's also definitely not dead, as healthy white mycelium grows through the golden layer. It's also still relatively heavy.

I tried to wipe the golden stuff with a paper towel to see if it was metabolites; very little of it was wiped; it seems to be part of the cake.

Notice the extrusion of healthy mycelium on the second pic (bottom right).

Since I was at a loss to understand the issue, I tried to put two drops of Hydrogen peroxide (10%) on the top of the cake. This resulted in some foaming; I then wiped it, and a bit of the golden stuff was wiped onto the paper towel, but not much more than when I tried this dry.

Now for my questions: is this contam ? if so, what is this stuff ? again, it doesn't smell or look slimy at all.

Should I consider it a loss and toss it in your opinion ? should I attempt a redunk (perhaps with H2O2), or possibly shred it and try a basic coir bulk tray ?

Anyone ? I've read extensively on potential contams on this very forum and I'm at a loss to identify what's happening here; especially given the lack of bad smell. I'd really like to know what went wrong, even guesses; especially since I used the exact same process to produce more cakes and didn't encounter the issue (they're pinning properly right now).

(also, sorry for bumping this thread if that isn't the custom here)

Agreed on most of this, which is my motivation for moving to agar; I'd still like to know what that thing is though.

Looks like it went bad and u spray the shit out of it with water. Dont do that! Bad! Shouldnt drown in water. A little mist is OK. But it shouldnt be soaked like that.

But the bacteria could cause that slimy/watery appearance. Bacteria infections are no bueno. Not sure the cause thou. Ive never had that issue thankfully.

Hi,

thanks a lot to the both of you; I'd say the texture is slightly spongier than healthy, normal cakes.

So yeah, probably some random bacteria. I should mention the mycelium itself took a long time to colonize originally in the jar (possibly the BRF ratio was a bit off), which means it may have been relatively weak and open to contamination by that bacteria ?

I imagine there is nothing to be done, even if the contam is limited to the casing (H2O2 dunk maybe ?) ?

How wet is the substrate you load into the jar?

It should feel like damp sand. It should not feel wet! It should only damp.

My substrate was OK I think, and did feel damp, not wet; but I used an unconventional sterilization method (one of those food steam cookers) after filling in the jar instead of a PC/a pot, and I suspect this approach either stripped some water content from the jars or added to it, despite the foil above the injection points.

It's the only thing that I did different and I had bad luck with colonization: even my second attempt only yielded 4 active jars out of 8 despite a reliable spore source (the other 4 were not contaminated, just inactive), so that's my theory at least.
