So let me get this straight, you feel that white Americans should be able to speak Spanish in order to communicate with other "Americans" yet you also feel that if you live in the United states you shouldn't need subtitles for other Americans can better understand you? Wtf kind of logic is that?

That's pretty racist too.

All the illegal immigrants I know can speak English very well.

I feel that Americans should speak English and at least one other language. Spanish would be most useful.

I feel that people who are native English speakers and grew up in the United States should be able to communicate without needing to be subtitled. Don’t you think that speaking in an unintelligible manner is going to be a huge handicap in life?

You’re claiming employees at Walmart or target don’t speak English? Sounds like bullshit to me.

That's a legitimate point. I had trouble with a fellow placing an order at Waffle House not long ago.

I felt like I needed a translator for his marble mouthed ebonics.

Sadly I do not. I left a large tip though because I was mildly embarrassed for him.

i live in california. theres tons of people here who dont speak any english and a majority of people who speak spanish at home and only understand the bare minimum. i often have to meet them mid way. i draw the line at walmart and target. i always complain to the managers but my complaints fall on deaf ears.

There was a pretty cute girl in there working which is odd for a Waffle House around here and it got to the point where he'd ask me something and I'd just look over at her and she'd nod or shake her head to coach me along.

It was really embarrassing but I couldn't understand a fucking word he was saying.

I'm a welding inspector and most of the welders I see these days speak little to no English.

Some times I just start shaking my head saying "No pinche bueno" and pretend to start writing stuff down in my notebook and usually they will go fetch someone that I can communicate with.

It is job security for me though. Most of them can't read and it leads to lots of fuck ups that keep me busy.

I’ve worked at Walmart, target, and various food joints and never had a coworker who spoke no English.

So I guess our anecdotes cancel each other out.

i lived in Sacramento CA for 3 years (2015-18) and at most stores and eateries the clerks/servers spoke english and spanish fluently. even the mexican stores they spoke fluent english to me and fluent spanish to coworkers. i never once had any language barriers dealing with folks in the service industry, even in spanish-speaking dominant communities. i think some of these people here are exaggerating a bit because they are closed minded.

also, 75% of my coworkers were mexican or south american and spoke fluenly in both languages.

There are parts of the southwest where Spanish is the native language and English is the second language and have been that way for centuries.  Still I find it hard to believe a large national chain like Walmart or target would hire someone who cannot speak any English.

I live in a county that is 35% foreign born and I’ve never encountered someone who spoke no English. There are some who aren’t very good but they always try.

I do notice, especially at Walmart, that most of the customers speak Spanish so I would think hiring bilingual employees would be a priority

In all my time as a kitchen manager, I had exactly one employee that spoke no English when I hired him.  Pedro was in his early 50's, walked the ~5 miles to and from work every day, and within six mos of me hiring him spoke English well enough to translate for a couple of the bus boys i later hired.

Motherfucker never once complained about any single thing, task, duty, or shift and was so GD grateful if I let him take half a semi-stale loaf of French bread or a tuna steak that was on its third day thawed home to his wife.

Many times I wished I had five Pedros instead of any ten mikes, johns, Charlies, carls, etc. when I was a KM.

Yea for sure no one is against people being bilingual... but you know whats great about America? Its so huge and diverse that the cultures and people change significantly by region. The people in Florida sound differently than the people in new York, etc. Maybe you should reap what you sow and respect different cultures, peoples and ways of life
