collonades is south metro heart panthers home ground loads of relaxed peeps  south i really miss something about it when i'm far away.  i lived near clarendon/aberfoyle years ago.  subs in the front garden with the aggies.  i really like going out to the little towns if dining out there i hope it aint subs.  when i first hunted i had this idea it was far away higher in the mountains.  but i lived in the hills already.  me and a deer basically walked right into each other that day, he freaked it but there was a moment where i felt i missed something awesome he felt my bad hunters vibe, unclear direction etcetc

First little bush walk for the season. Glad I was patient and didn't head out too early like I do most years. Plenty happening out there. Alot of pins and mature specimens about!

Not sure if active or not, no clue what they are but didn't show signs of bluing. Didn't want to pick em.

They look nice though, in the forests of southern SA. :smile:

Also found this bad boy pin though, left him there.

Adelaide South East (Kuitpo general area) was pretty bare except for a mountain of Mycena and massive logs of Gyms. Does it pick up in winter or die down?

@The Thing, yeah was not confident about it at all so I just left them be. They were found fairly close to the pin I found which got me excited but good thing I left them.

@Deadpan, the pin you found is protostropharia semiglobata. Not active.
@frunco, you did find some pins but nothing active.

How can you tell they're galerina's someone could almost mistake them for subs they look almost identical.

I found some gyms last month, and so far no luck with subs! But I'll keep looking. I've never had luck on my own, spread some of tha luck :heart: :tongue:

Mhm, luck seems dry for me too, 2 trips down through Kuipto and one up north in Crawford Forest (each about 2 to 3 hours) and no dice; I should caveat that statement by noting it's my first season. I am confident in my supposed ability to identify P. Sub, although, the issue seems that I am simply not bumping into them. I have, however, encountered an innumerous taxonomy of odd Fungi, which has been an interesting past-time pursuit so far.

Anyone have any beginner tips to divulge? i.e., should the focus be on looking through the depths of the pine forests or should it be along perimeter of said forests? What's the incidence of Subaeruginosa findings among native habitation versus pine plantations?

Reading and inferring from the anecdotal accounts of the successful hunts of others seems to provide conflicting suggestions - any clarity would be greatly appreciated.

As for pines v eucs, I think the jury is still out on that one. Most people including myself would probably take grass land on the edge of, or native forest in general over pines, but that's not to say pines can't be bountiful.

I think my first 2 seasons I tried and failed. It is frustrating. Hence why nobody will give you a location that they worked super hard to find. But you'll get there. I personally have never found a sub in pines. I would say "pine adjacent" at best. Google maps helped me a bit. I looked for peaks and gullys that looked like a good spot. Then I used street view to check out what the habitat looked like and that's how I found my first singular sub sitting there on it's own like a sign from god!

Hi all long time no see,
I am well, living in the hills these days so it is nice to have nature at my back door.
just some pics from a bush walk today seems the subs are just starting up in the north.


and a few other shots of various fungi...

could that be aleutica in the second lot of pics? i could not see any evidence of bruising and did not keep it for a print but hoping someone may have a clue.
my guess is that by this time next week the season will be in full swing,most spots i know have already been thrashed and alot are taking pins and all due to how sparse it has been.
a very late season but in my experience the later the season the longer it goes i have found subs in the north as late as mid october in the past but peak tends to be around mid june/july, that beeing said most spots that usually flush hard with hundreds of subs only have a few pins about but a few nice spots with the perfect microclimate are now producing.
please dont be like the guy on the youtube vid i watched the other day
