Hi Im new to this. But ive been reading alot and went out today for the 1st time.
I have a few questions and would really appreciate anyones help. Do they all have to be blue to be active and how big do they have to be to be effective.

Personally I'd be careful posting pics like that mate, just saying. There are all sorts of people browsing this forum..... or in other words I'd prefer pics of the habitat, pics of them growing in the ground and maybe some inactives and things you found out there..

I love the shot with the Echidna. Was this photo taken in the far south?

Came across a monster Gymnopilus junonius today.

Must be close to 10kg wet and around 60cm across. Even the stipe is enormous.

Question for the forum...how is the current weather likely to affect sub patches? Frosts are here and there's not much rain coming up. I've seen pictures of edibles frozen solid on a FB group i'm on.

Cheers I figured a gym this size was worthy of a post.
Frost is bad news for mushrooms unfortunately. Pins exposed to frost will abort and frozen mushrooms will oxidize and rot.

Yeah went picking yesterday and all the subs I found were frozen stiff, I picked them anyway and straight in to the dehydrator. They dried fine but I think I got them just in time.

That shot of the echidna reminded me of my last hunt, got real close to one. Didn't mind me sitting 3 feet away at all. And a lengthy sub I found amongst the bracken.



And Bob, that is RIDICULOUS! Why do mushrooms of seemingly many species occasionally grow to huge proportions?

expect the subs to abort in this frost but a fresh flush will not be far away i would expect.
frozen water pipes in the morning till around midday.
keep warm peeps.

also i agree with an earlier statement people need to take more care posting haul pics online, too many big eyes and ears can get you in the poop, no disrespect.

I picked a pretty decent haul last night. Most were inside grass and bracken around my patches. Nearly all of the exposed ones were fucked.

Hi all. I've had a bit of a late start this year, first outing today. Was more of a bushwalk than anything. I would like to find some in Eucalypt forest as last year I only had luck in pine plantations. I have noticed that there are a lot of different phenotypes of subs going around in SA. Is there any difference between the subs usually found in the pines as opposed to the ones found in native bush?

Went for a hunt down south today, the frost has definitely halted progress for the moment, heres a photo of a frosty sub i found :grin:

Also, what are your guys opinions on picking unopened subs if frost has already got to them? I noticed Bob mentioned they abort meaning they stop growing yeah? Assuming that the pins are not growing any more to release the spores i can't see a problem, but wanted to confirm it with you guys before i pick any frosty pins in the future.

Just leave the pins.
You would be very surprised at how they can recover and continue to grow if the conditions become right.

Also they weigh almost nothing.

Must be freezing out there at night, I've been chased out of a forest by Forestry SA feral animal control in the dark so be careful out there.... they have big guns, grumpy attitudes and shoot whatever moves from a long way away. Nice roos, did you look for alutacea there?

It wasnt too bad in terms of cold, it still felt like things could do with abit more cold and wetter.

Ive never seen the forestry sa guys, im pretty sure it would be illegal for them to just discharge firearms at whatever in the forest, however Ive seen many signs at the entrance of forests that say this forest is closed at night or words to that effect.

I had a look around for alutacea but didnt find any in that area I was looking.

I suppose it's possible to get shot, but forestry SA use pro-shooters, and they won't just shoot at anything that's in the spotlight. Not to mention you can see a spotlight coming from a mile away.

I honestly wouldn't be worried unless you're dressed as a furry, and too busy furiously fucking a stranger to notice the bat signal coming your way  :lol:
