Great to see some familiar names back this year. :smile:

It's going to take a lot of leg work to track down the subs given the start we're having.

Ooisi, the active gyms always pop up before subs. With cultivated specimens I've found they will fruit within just 8 days if temps dip below the 20's consistently. Ofcourse you still need a good microclimate with enough moisture to find them.

P.alutacea can pin within the same time frame as gyms. I haven't had a look for them yet. They're probably out there but their size is heavily determined by conditions. They'd be miniscule and not worth the effort at the moment.

P.subaeruginosa require several weeks below 20c temp before they'll pin and so they're typically the last active species to appear. Air temperature alone won't tell the story though. As long as the ground remains cool we can have day time fluctuations up into the high 20's or 30's and still see fruits. There are already some microclimates which are consistently reaching the dew point and cool enough but it'll take some time until they fruit.

I'll be keeping a lookout for other species this season for sure and I know some of the other SA hunters have been doing so in the past seasons too. NYK :congrats:

I have a feeling P.papuana does not occur in SA but if it does it's quite rare. It's not an inconspicuous species. I've not encountered it in a decade or 15,000kms I've walked searching the Mt Lofty ranges.

There have been many more experienced hunters searching for actives over decades which will attest to not having found any species resembling P.papuana. The rainforest habitat found in the Grampians, Otways and along the Great Dividing Range is not present in the Mount Lofty Ranges..

P.tasmaniana. I think there's a greater possibility it occurs in SA due the suitable habitat. Given its size and macroscopic characteristics I'd imagine it too would be quite rare or it'd have turned up by now.

If P.semilanceata didn't occur in SA I'd be very surprised. I'm not thinking the Mount Lofty Ranges but rather the picture perfect habitat from Robe to Mount Gambier. Seeing ent's amazing finds closeby in the Otways gives me more reason to believe in their presence in the far south.

As for P.alutacea it's a species which has been right under our noses for a long time and simply ignored by hunters who dubbed it as the inactive deconica. It's understandable given the likeness of the two species.

I've photographed the species since 2012 and it was alway identified as deconica. I know many hunters prior have found it over the years
and I recall seeing a reference to an active species found growing from dung back in one of the early SA threads. It's likely some hunters were already targeting the species then. It wasn't until I found an uprooted specimen with obvious bluing at the stipe that I started asking questions.

From my travels to NSW and Victoria I believe we may have some species which are unique to SA. I suspect not all the phenotypes of P.subaeruginosa are the one species. Some of the colours and morphology we have in SA I've not seen anywhere else in Australia.
