Checking the ego
    #25914981 -

The ego. It's a beautiful thing. But it also can be your biggest enemy. Let me start with saying I bodybuild. When I first started I was pretty insecure. Wasnt sure what I was doing and looked forward to learning new things from people.

As the years went on, I started getting bigger. The weight I was moving was getting higher.. just progress. But a few years ago I really started to hear my ego "oh you're bigger than him, you're superior". Back then I didnt think too much of it.

After I started dosing.. things started to change a bit.. after a good two handful of mushroom experiences.. I notice my ego still doing the same thing. But these times around I check it - I'll catch my ego feeding me this bullshit and I answer back with (you're no fucking better than this guy, shut the fuck up". Its almost like an argument in my head.

Honestly, its very fucking strange. I'm just using the gym thing as a reference because it connects so much to my life.

But also, on the other side of the spectrum, I'll see someone driving a 100k car and get out in a suit that costs more than my car. And I'll think to myself "damn this guy makes me look like shit", but I then again say to myself "it's a box with 4 wheels and just fucking clothes, hes no better than you".

It's a weird battle. I'm not sure if I'm the only one who battles with things like this on a day to day basis.. but I'm so glad I have had an awakening to check my ego. Its almost like my ego is not me.. it's this other half that just needs to be better than everyone, but then the other part of me tunes in and tells it to shut the fuck up.

Does anyone else experience this? I'm slowly working on fighting this battle. Even if it never goes away, at least I'm aware of this issue and confronting in instead of letting it manifest into something terrible.

Sure still working on it.

Longest I've managed without ego and remaining totally present was a couple of weeks after an intense meditation and controlled breathing session.

Drugs make it far worse for me unfortunately.  I'd need to quit all use and meditate every day to get back there.

I get the arguements in my head stuff a lot recently.  I hate it.  It does feel like its not even "me".

I've been focusing on chanting recently to focus the stream of thought onto that instead of the ego's negativity (which it feeds off to re-confirm itself).

You’re 100% not alone in that lol.

This is the massive problem with labeling an aspect of you as the word ego. Ego becomes a thing where people blame all negative actions and thoughts on their ego and think only the positive is what’s really them.

In reality, you’ve gotta stop labeling shit and realize it was indeed you thinking that, it was the situation what you are as a human being and the events that happened before that led you to having that thought.

You see, the thoughts like you’re describing we have when we’re not being fully aware, but there’s enough so you catch it right after it happens.

You’re being way too hard on yourself arguing yourself like that it’s not healthy, and as long as you’re alive you will never free yourself entirely from another aspect of yourself, it is you.

Wow at least you have the grits to admit that tho, a lot of people here and in the psychedelic community period have just worsened their ego so bad with psychs and it’s tricky cause for them it’s masked to be the opposite
So I’d say you recognizing it’s not doing you favors is really over half the battle fr

And to OP
I feel you man, keep doing that and after a while of these arguments they won’t be arguments anymore , at least I think, it would become more of a habit to not listen to your ego perhaps after a long while it would t speak anymore
I’m not entirely sure but that’s where I’m tryna get

Was ego apart of evolution to drive one to survive ? And in modern society where that isn’t as hard as in the wild it’s like reprogrammed into a “get more get more “ competition kind of thing ?

One of the problems I always run into with comparisons with others who are different - better off, smarter, more skilled, whatever, than I am is that I forget that they're on a different path, or playing a different game, or finding "joy" in the things they have. If I had that car or house or pile of cash it wouldn't contribute to my happiness because that's not the path I'm on. Usually I just give out a wistful sigh and try to imagine what it would be like. This (usually) makes me realize that it would suck for me - I mean, how much more shit do I really need? - and I move on. Until it happens again.

that guy is smaller than me, that guy has more money than me...  these split second judgments are unavoidable.
remember that everyone is different with good/bad qualities according to society. theres always someone better and worse on the spectrum of that given quality and we are not the author of the qualities. even the drive to improve yourself is a quality that you were born/conditioned into. to dwell on differences is also a given quality of the person that could be good or bad according to/for society depending on how you look at it.
if an insecurity is driving you to better yourself then its probably a good thing right. life is competition, a game . is winning or having fun in a game more important to you, what would you tell your kids?  both maybe?  some people think that weightlifting past a certain point or buying lavish cars is an ego issue and they may even pity your priorities. someone who works out heavily probably wouldnt tho. and if you want a partner that is in shape then you should be too.
reading back, not sure what my point is on this one. wake n bake is in effect.
I guess if the overanalyzing of differences and where you stand societally is bothering you then maybe try focus more on the relative and deterministic nature of everything, and that might slow the thinking down, probably only minimally tho. like I said judgment seems to be a natural automatic thing

“You are bigger than him, you are superior”

“His car, clothes and money make me look like shit”

I think you are right that this is ego doing its thing.

But, i want to point out that both of those examples seem to be insecurity. Rather than inflated ego.
If I was advising, I would say quit trying to argue. Edit: you will never win an argument with the ego with statements like “you aren’t any better” or “that person is equal”..... ego NEVER believes those kind of things. Nature of the beast. 😊

Just notice the thoughts, don’t judge them. Your not a jerk because you had thoughts.

Instead of trying to defeat the ego thru a mental debate or counterpoint. Another practice might be something like,Try asking your ego why it feels as tho it is important to notice  if the other guy is bigger/smaller or has a better car. Then just listen for a bit.

I like what lurker said here.
besides that it does help to understand about those people with cars and clothing that are simply beyond your means. They do flaunt them to intimidate, but they do it because they are themselves intimidated not to do so. (they have no clue how to be different so they continue with the pagentry)
It's no biggie either way.

for the most part the term "ego" is both arbitrary and non-scientific, but if you become involved in manipulative concepts about it you will certainly feel manipulated.

I prefer the term mind, or associative mind, and we can love it and hate it at the same time but we are nowhere without it.

You don't necessarily need to argue with the ego. Just let it be known that you are aware of the things it's trying to do.

Ego and psychedelics... is a two way street. They can inflate or deflate it. It depends on which way you approach the tripping experience.

And some people need to deflate their ego, while others need to inflate it. Just need to find your sweet spot. Basically stand for yourself and trust yourself without being an asshole

Totally understood. I have seen my ego flare up after trips. The next trip usually sets me back  in my place. Man, when you've been a dick to, especially those you love the trips can be very hard.

You aint lying with that. Last trip I broke down over the way I treat those around me particularly my family. There is always room to treat those you love and who love you better. Managing the shame that comes from biting the hand that feeds (loves) you can be cripplingly difficult - especially when you know that after how you've treated them, they still continue to love you.

If one is fortunate enough to be given unconditional love, it's the greatest gift in life and I truly believe that. Loving someone unconditionally teaches them they can forgive themselves.

A person unable to self love will self loathe. Unchecked shame destroys people.

OP, I'm experiencing the exact same thing in all aspects of my life due to the mush, it has not always been fun to come to realization about things that I've relied on the prop my ass up. I believe it is entirely healthy personal growth for me. Shit, some people spend a fortune with a therapist just to get to the point of being able to observe themselves as they really are when the mushroom provides that for us! Another added benefit is that I get to geek out, learn new things, practice microbiology and grow myself almost for free. Hell yeah!

I try not to indulge in the internal arguement too much though but just try and observe not judge myself and let the mushrooms do the work.  This  is not easy for me because truthfully I have always judged in one way or the other, I think most humans do. It would be pretty fucking peaceful if I were able to just observe things and not judge..I have a long ways to go in this spiritual journey and I'm really grateful for it.

Absoutely man! Couldn't have said it better myself. It's a hell of a journe th were on, but at least we are aware and embracing it. I was telling my friends the same thing. Like you won't find no better therapy in the world, that beats a bag of mushrooms. Its the absolute truth. How deep my thoughts get into my life is astounding. They have helped me a lot. They help me realize what my ego does now. And now that I'm aware of it.. I'm practicing changing things from the inside.

Its not so much an internal arguement as it used to be, now it's just a thoughts that washes away. With time my friend. With time!

Ahh. Those parts of the trips can get deep. I mostly think it's because we spend so much time distracted that we are subconsciously just assholes. But when the trip comes.. you have nothing but your thoughts. No distractions. Just going Down the thought process. Always get that uncomf feeling when I know I've been a dick to someone who will never stop loving me. All I want to do is hug them.

And no shit. Usually after my trips on that afterglow.. when I'm lying in my bed.. I'll write something long and beautiful to that person. Whether it be a text or fb post.. I need to Express some type of love. And I feel so much more connected to my words. So much more genuine.
