Pinning, Not Colonized
    #25902892 -

So, I have a cake pinning, but it doesn't appear to be 100% colonized. Is it time to dunk and roll? I'm at 24 days into colonization, PF Tek.

Also, I have a landlord coming by in the next few days, could I refrigerate this cake and not abort the pin?

you could probably refridge it, not sure tho if pin will abort or not though. I would let it finish colonizing after you take it out

The top is your dry verm and won't colonize over.

Bottom looks colonized, just little bacterial and wet substrate against glass.

You could birth it now. few more days wouldn't hurt it I don't think. Fridge should slow things down, but may not be necessary.

I think I'll leave it until after the landlord comes through, then I'll birth, dunk, roll, and move to the fruiting chamber.

Yes sir that's probably your best bet. IMO its better to have them slightly growing invitro then birth, then to try to birth uncolonized.

uncolonized equals more vulnerable to contams IMO.

Yeah that part that isn't colonized looks like your verm layer. Sometimes your cake will shrink a lot during colonization and the dry verm layer,(which will not colonize just pour that part off when you birth)which is usually hidden behind the lid ring ,will creep it's way down to where actual substrate used to be. So if you can't see pieces of rice in it then it's just verm. Also when I used to do jars I always waited for pins to form before birthing. it just seemed to produce a better 1st flush even with losing some pins to damage while birthing the jars.

The part that doesn't appear colonized is the bottom of the jar, the 2nd pic. Everywhere else looks solidly colonized. I'm not sure why the bottom didn't finish out...

still think it's just wet/bacterial substrate against glass. That's what happens, doesn't turn white.

That's pretty common on the bottom. If it was worse it might cause a problem but you look fine. That's just excess water settling to the bottom. Too much water pooling and it'll cause bacterial contams. If it worries you just add a very thin layer of dry verm to the bottom of the next batch of jars you make. It'll give the water a place to go without creating an anaerobic environment prone to bacteria.that way if your jars end up being a little too wet it's not a big deal

No, extra verm won't be colonizable and adding excess water to it can still breed bacteria. That's a bad idea

As said the top dry verm layer will not colonize. U want the BRF mix to colonize. Looks like its ready to fruit. Putting it in the fridge before the landlord comes is a good idea, and u can do two things at once by dunking the cake in a container of water and then put into the fridge.

it's not added to allow excess water to be intentionally added. It's to act as a buffer in case you don't have your judge of field capacity yet. Yes too much water can still breed bacteria. But a VERY THIN(as in half the width of a pencil) will help out if it is a little bit too wet. It is not however a way to be sloppy it's just a safety net. And if your verm layer is thin enough it will colonize through it on the bottom because the verm on the bottom will be slightly moist compared to the top layer. And even if it doesn't it's non nutritious and not very suceptable to contams. It worked wonderfully for me but it's may not work for everyone

i understand you didn't mean add moisture, I was refering to to excess moisture or condensation wetting it. I was unclear.

Still think it's a not a good practice. I think the problem it's attempting to band aid is what would cause it to contam any way, making it a little self defeating. Proper field capacity is not difficult and would prevent the problem all together. Simply doing 2:1:1 accurately will get you in the right spot.

I'm not saying it will always cause failure, but it's superfluous at best imo.

It's totally superfluous. That's why I told op "if it worries you" before I gave the tip. Yes it does only a little to actually prevent the contams, it's more of an aesthetic thing. it won't increase your chances of contams because the moist verm is not anaerobic. but it does run a good chance of giving a new grower a little peace of mind until they're a little more confident. And IME I've never had a jar fail because of anything to do with a bottom verm layer in a decade of growing. not saying others haven't I'm just saying I put it to the test countless times successfully.

I don't understand what you mean by not anaerobic. So it's aerobic? I'm not sure it would matter, I think bacteria of both kinds are problems.

I don't agree on that piece of mind with something that probably doesn't help. knowing you got that balance right after a try or two will do that, and knowing field capacity will help you down the road with bulk subs.

Coincidentally, some have suggested/tried some verm in Grain jars for moisture concerns. It also appears really hinge on the grain prep anyway. Verm doesn't seem to noticably help like some think it might.

/E to address the addition. I'm not saying it'll ruin your jars. I'm using superfluous because it's excessive, not aware of a reason to think it's giving a benefit. Even if it's not detrimental.

Seeing as the verm is preventing water from pooling then yes it is aerobic. There are pockets of air there and while both types of bacteria are a problem anaerobic bacteria is whats this is meant to deal with and it's seems to be the most common to encounter especially if it's forming on the bottom of the jars and not around the inoccuation point

I'm not trying to attack, just understand what you're saying.

I'm still not seeing the benefit, i don't think it works like that. Jars are always aerobic since there's ge and no points that air can't get to and they still can go bacterial. The verm space isn't any different than the rest of the jar. If the jar was anaerobic, myc wouldn't grow.

Wait the 5-7 days after full colonization for the mycelium to consolidate the BRF.
