hey that glowing mycelium idea sounds liek a good one. i'm going to have to try that. you can just use any light you want to check on your jars. i have for the past 16 days and theres been no premature pinning in the jars. two of them are 100% colonized...now i just have to figure out how to get them to pin in the light without my other homelivers seeing them.

A black light would be certainly cool but it's probably not really necessary. If all you are doing is checking the jars every couple days that amount of exposure to light probably isn't going to do much.

I posted something about this last month... I don't think I followed it up very well though. Some contams show up as funky colors under a black light. And mycelium is sort of bright and glowy, so it's easy to see little dark or colored spots before you would notice it otherwise.
Black-pin mold (I believe) showed up as a dark patch under blacklight a day before I could see it in normal light.
The rhizomorph (sp) hubs in my jars had a bright pink spot at their centers. I don't know if that's just because of the concentration of mycelium there, or if there's something else going on... like a different kind of tissue... anyone know?
I don't know for sure if the light causes any problems with growth, the votes were kind of mixed on that one. To be safe, I'm assuming that it could kill spores, or at least keep them from germinating. So I wouldn't start using the light until there's visible growth. I'm sure someone will disagree and say that a blacklight isn't strong enough to cause problems.
I'm growing some contams right now to see how they look / are affected by the light. I'll post my findings.

If you want to check your cakes/casings without triggering pinning, you can use red light (as stated in the TMC). However with cakes this is really unnecessary so long as you check them briefly not too often.

Casings I don't know, it can't hurt.

a black light would ionduce pinning but i would worry about it any way. cakes like to be fully colonized before they pin, not tsaying that they wont pin but you kids are just paranoid

Yes, red is the light to use if you don't want light to hit the myc. Blacklights are harmless, but will induce pinning (blue light is what cubes like most).

Growing cakes in the dark in not good unless you are using the PF original strain or casing. Colonizing jars of other strains in light will make them pin sooner, better, and often invitro. A decent amount of research has been done on this lately, and I have seen many strains pin quicker on cakes or pin invitro if colonized in normal room light. If you plan on casing, you don't want light to hit them until they colonize the casing layer, if that is possible. The PF strain should not be subjected to light until it is colonized or almost colonized, because it will pin early.

A foaf checks his every day sometimes three times a day in full light and it hasn't induced pinning yet (over 3 years). Don't be so paranoid. It's all good. :wink:
