"black mold" (I guess mold with black spores is too much of a mouthful for the layperson) gets such a bad rap. I love the stuff, personally.

On a serious note, the danger that Stachybotrys chartarum ("toxic black mold") poses really does get blown out of proportion in popular culture. It's not the bubonic plague, people...

Although it's not as bad as most obsess about, it is still not wise to expose yourself to it when you can easily avoid it. Why chance symptomatic effects when there's a wealth of information here to prevent or address that in early stages? Correct me if I am wrong, someone told me RR developed a severe allergy to just oyster spores from his exposure whilst cultivating them. Who wants to find that kind of stuff out after the effects set in? Im sure if he could go back he'd take precautions - and be able to walk out into the woods all seasons today. And if this isn't true then I was misinformed.

I just personally advise anyone to have full knowledge of what they're getting into before letting something expand to a concernable point, for anything in life. My family is hardcore asthmatic so the shit I do would easily affect them if I am not careful, especially growing mold, so that's another whole aspect to consider.

So exposure to a mold blotch causing severe illness? Nah. Growing a whole jar of some funk shit n opening it.. you get what you have comin or you get lucky

the nitpicking of wordchoice in mycology never fails to amuse me. I'll go on a rant in lighthearted jest

actually, only the spores are black/green. So while black/green mold is the most popular/readily understood term for this organism I'm going to declare it wrong based on a biological technicality. And to top it all off I won't offer an alternative term, because there would be no obvious informal name for these organisms unless we plan to formally identify them down to the species and use the latin names, which would be beyond pointless.

I think to simplify things we should call all varieties of mold white mold, offwhite mold, eggshell white mold, etc. Easier to differentiate that way.

The sky's not blue, thats a common misconception, its actually reflected light..I correct people on this constantly and am highly regarded as a result. Its also gotten me laid a couple times.

Actually thats not a green plant, thats just chlorophyll

its not poop, its manure. Proper terminology has not only lessened my rate of contams, it has also improved yields!

Its not mushroom piss, its secondary metabolites. Colloquial names for things are blasphemous and should be discarded en mass to improve colonization times. This is an exceedingly productive topic of conversation and WORTH FIGHTING FOR!

I read these posts in the voice of that generic nerdy kid from cartoons with the exaggerated lisp. All in good fun. I know you're just being informative, I'm not trying to be rude here.

Well, I will respond in lighthearted jest. The Latin binomial system was adopted specifically because of common names are often non-specific misnomers. Should we just call them trippy mushrooms? Is identifying them as Psilocybe cubensis pointless? Anyone who is serious about a subset of biology, like mycology, will learn the latin binomials of the species they are studying, because that is the only way to accurately label a singular species. Anyway, whether or not something is a misnomer can be largely a matter of opinion. ("use of a wrong or inappropriate name")

OOOooooh, don't get RR started on that one :lmafo:. It's not a bad thing to attempt to use correct terminology. "Myc piss" is just stupid, honestly.

Absolutely. But these are contams, which nobody ever truly identifies in this hobby because there's no point.  So we stick exclusively to informal names, which yes are a matter of opinion.

I really can't even think of another good informal name for black/green mold other than black/green spores, which what?

Of course identifying the mushrooms themselves properly is of importance, I'd never argue against that for this or for plants/animals. Especially because of whichever genius it was that decided we should name two different species cyanescens

You're so right. I shouldn't criticize your terminolgy as you shouldn't criticize mine. I think we've reached a compromise friend! :bliss:

I like myc piss because everybody knows what you're talking about when you say myc piss, which is the only quality I want in a name. I don't get squeamish about using the word piss

I knew somebody would grill me for some misphrasing about the sky being blue/plants being green. You got me

No bad blood dude, I just enjoy offering a good retort.

Go ahead and criticize my terminology! I will listen and decide for myself if your critique deserves merit. I understand what you're saying though.

I think part of where people take issue with "bad" terminology like "myc piss" is because we want to hold the community to a higher standard of learning. If I don't know what a word means, and it's a topic that is relevant for me, I look it up and it contributes to me learning about the subject. When I was a kid, I had teachers tell me that if I picked up a book and didn't understand five or more words on a single page, I should give up on reading that book. Fuck that. I understand that approach, but I learned more stumbling through books like that than I would have avoiding them.

For the same reason, I will use the more pedagogical terminology, if I know it. I think this is a place of learning, and that's why people sometimes get hung up on the nomenclature. Either way, you are entitled to your opinions  :hatsoff:

This point takes the cake, nice phrasing/good point. Genuinely.

God that kind of thing drove me nuts in elementary school, librarians actively trying to prevent you from getting books that are too difficult.

Reminds me of how they would teach us  to just guess what unfamiliar words meant based on context instead of looking them up the dictionary. They would actually tout this as superior to the dictionary. Don't learn for real dog, just guess and move on.

When I was in elementary school my grandpa suggested I read some medical book he had read. When I first started it I had to look up damn near every word in every sentence, heavy with medical terminology, but I read that entire damn book and it was a valuable lesson.

So... I'm pretty sure mycelium can over take mold, and it appears to be doing that. I'm not an expert by any means...but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express 🤣
No for real though I've read all of Stamets books and I recall him have a contaminated cake and buried it and the mycelium totally wiped out all signs of contams and fruited really well..
And since our fabulous fungal friends can even decompose toxic substances and produce mushrooms 100% edible...I don't think it's crazy to not totally give up on your grow. That said.... I probably wouldn't open that shit up in your house... Be safe use proper equipment... Don't want that shit getting in your lungs. Be smart, be safe, no reason to take unnecessary risks.... I'd take it outside and bury it... Wearing a mask and gloves lol.
Whatever you keep us informed! Let's take back this hijacked thread! 😋

No it can't. Read back, couple TC's already explained what's happening.

Burying is something different than trying to cultivate it. People bury contamed things all the time and sometimes get lucky.

Old books have all kinds of bad info. From what I hear, Stamets has a ton of wrong/uninformed stuff in his books. Not reliable for cult info.

I wouldn’t call Stamets a liar but he tends to play a little fast and loose with the truth. Actual mycologists kind of regard him as an oddity/embarrassment to the discipline. He has made some real contributions but you need to take his statements with a big ol grain of salt. Keep in mind that he believes that the agaricus mafia is in cahoots with the American government to suppress his work and that his life is at risk for exposing the extreme dangers of eating agaricus. I see him as a businessman who has a convincing pitch.

Aaaalso, basically ripped rr on some cultures from what I understand.  His company basically called rr incompetent.

The business about Forests communicating through mycelium like an internet framework is also doo doo.  That’s some unprovable hogwash.  Magical thinking is an actual dsm disorder.  Crystals that cure depression and other such horseshit.
