What the hell is going on?! Is the mycelium winning over black mold ? Update: second flush done * 1
    #25833551 -

OK, so one of my jars were badly contaminated with some black shit, so i packed it in a plastic bag and was going to toss it...I forgot about it for a week and when i saw it again it was almost fully colonized. What is going on here? Is the mycelium actually winning or is the white stuff just another contam wich happens to be stronger than black mold?  I opened it and smelled it, it was mellow and sweet.

Update:
WOw. A lot of people on my side today. I really began to question myself on what i was actually doing and was kind of loosing the intrest. But Thanks for understanding me. I did this as an eperiment frome a spore syringe that the previous house owner left behind. i am not planning on doing mycology in the future. When it got contamed i was going to toss it and leave it at that but when i forgot about the jar and discovered the mycelium growth i figured what the heck lets see who wins, will it be fruit or will the contam take over the mycelium before that poin. And here we are. i am sorry if i offended somebody with this experiment or if i have made myself unclear about what i am actually trying to acheive here.

Thanks for supporting this thread, wether you are against it or not. Here are some pictures as of today

Update:

ha cool. Sure looks like mycelium to me.

I've got some azurescens duking it out with black mold right now on a brf cake. The jar was about 50/50 at the start of the fight, should be a nice clean match.

cubes i'm assuming?

Ive heard that mycelium has a really good defense mechanism but thats pretty impressive.  I wonder if you grew it out more if you could remove all of the black mold from the jar naturally.

What part of cover the mold is unclear?

That's not gonna produce anything worthwhile. Can't break it up. You'd be lucky if a fruit or 2 mature from top fruiting. It may make some pins, most/all will abort.

The term 'black mold' is a misnomer.  Most mycelium is light in color, whether from mold or mushroom.  The black, green, pink, etc., comes from the reproductive spores.  What has likely happened is the mucor spores have germinated and are using the substrate.  Dumpster tek.

You pose significant hazard to your own health by entertaining the growth of contams less you wear a respirator when disposing of the jar's contents. Even then you're adding an unnecessary amount of spores to the environment or your person. That's really a trashable jar entirely, friend.

"black mold" (I guess mold with black spores is too much of a mouthful for the layperson) gets such a bad rap. I love the stuff, personally.

On a serious note, the danger that Stachybotrys chartarum ("toxic black mold") poses really does get blown out of proportion in popular culture. It's not the bubonic plague, people...

Although it's not as bad as most obsess about, it is still not wise to expose yourself to it when you can easily avoid it. Why chance symptomatic effects when there's a wealth of information here to prevent or address that in early stages? Correct me if I am wrong, someone told me RR developed a severe allergy to just oyster spores from his exposure whilst cultivating them. Who wants to find that kind of stuff out after the effects set in? Im sure if he could go back he'd take precautions - and be able to walk out into the woods all seasons today. And if this isn't true then I was misinformed.

I just personally advise anyone to have full knowledge of what they're getting into before letting something expand to a concernable point, for anything in life. My family is hardcore asthmatic so the shit I do would easily affect them if I am not careful, especially growing mold, so that's another whole aspect to consider.

So exposure to a mold blotch causing severe illness? Nah. Growing a whole jar of some funk shit n opening it.. you get what you have comin or you get lucky

the nitpicking of wordchoice in mycology never fails to amuse me. I'll go on a rant in lighthearted jest

actually, only the spores are black/green. So while black/green mold is the most popular/readily understood term for this organism I'm going to declare it wrong based on a biological technicality. And to top it all off I won't offer an alternative term, because there would be no obvious informal name for these organisms unless we plan to formally identify them down to the species and use the latin names, which would be beyond pointless.

I think to simplify things we should call all varieties of mold white mold, offwhite mold, eggshell white mold, etc. Easier to differentiate that way.

The sky's not blue, thats a common misconception, its actually reflected light..I correct people on this constantly and am highly regarded as a result. Its also gotten me laid a couple times.

Actually thats not a green plant, thats just chlorophyll

its not poop, its manure. Proper terminology has not only lessened my rate of contams, it has also improved yields!

Its not mushroom piss, its secondary metabolites. Colloquial names for things are blasphemous and should be discarded en mass to improve colonization times. This is an exceedingly productive topic of conversation and WORTH FIGHTING FOR!

I read these posts in the voice of that generic nerdy kid from cartoons with the exaggerated lisp. All in good fun. I know you're just being informative, I'm not trying to be rude here.

Well, I will respond in lighthearted jest. The Latin binomial system was adopted specifically because of common names are often non-specific misnomers. Should we just call them trippy mushrooms? Is identifying them as Psilocybe cubensis pointless? Anyone who is serious about a subset of biology, like mycology, will learn the latin binomials of the species they are studying, because that is the only way to accurately label a singular species. Anyway, whether or not something is a misnomer can be largely a matter of opinion. ("use of a wrong or inappropriate name")

Absolutely. But these are contams, which nobody ever truly identifies in this hobby because there's no point.  So we stick exclusively to informal names, which yes are a matter of opinion.

I really can't even think of another good informal name for black/green mold other than black/green spores, which what?

Of course identifying the mushrooms themselves properly is of importance, I'd never argue against that for this or for plants/animals. Especially because of whichever genius it was that decided we should name two different species cyanescens

I like myc piss because everybody knows what you're talking about when you say myc piss, which is the only quality I want in a name. I don't get squeamish about using the word piss

No bad blood dude, I just enjoy offering a good retort.

Go ahead and criticize my terminology! I will listen and decide for myself if your critique deserves merit. I understand what you're saying though.

I think part of where people take issue with "bad" terminology like "myc piss" is because we want to hold the community to a higher standard of learning. If I don't know what a word means, and it's a topic that is relevant for me, I look it up and it contributes to me learning about the subject. When I was a kid, I had teachers tell me that if I picked up a book and didn't understand five or more words on a single page, I should give up on reading that book. Fuck that. I understand that approach, but I learned more stumbling through books like that than I would have avoiding them.

For the same reason, I will use the more pedagogical terminology, if I know it. I think this is a place of learning, and that's why people sometimes get hung up on the nomenclature. Either way, you are entitled to your opinions  :hatsoff:

God that kind of thing drove me nuts in elementary school, librarians actively trying to prevent you from getting books that are too difficult.

Reminds me of how they would teach us  to just guess what unfamiliar words meant based on context instead of looking them up the dictionary. They would actually tout this as superior to the dictionary. Don't learn for real dog, just guess and move on.

When I was in elementary school my grandpa suggested I read some medical book he had read. When I first started it I had to look up damn near every word in every sentence, heavy with medical terminology, but I read that entire damn book and it was a valuable lesson.

So... I'm pretty sure mycelium can over take mold, and it appears to be doing that. I'm not an expert by any means...but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express 🤣
No for real though I've read all of Stamets books and I recall him have a contaminated cake and buried it and the mycelium totally wiped out all signs of contams and fruited really well..
And since our fabulous fungal friends can even decompose toxic substances and produce mushrooms 100% edible...I don't think it's crazy to not totally give up on your grow. That said.... I probably wouldn't open that shit up in your house... Be safe use proper equipment... Don't want that shit getting in your lungs. Be smart, be safe, no reason to take unnecessary risks.... I'd take it outside and bury it... Wearing a mask and gloves lol.

No it can't. Read back, couple TC's already explained what's happening.

Burying is something different than trying to cultivate it. People bury contamed things all the time and sometimes get lucky.

Old books have all kinds of bad info. From what I hear, Stamets has a ton of wrong/uninformed stuff in his books. Not reliable for cult info.

I wouldn’t call Stamets a liar but he tends to play a little fast and loose with the truth. Actual mycologists kind of regard him as an oddity/embarrassment to the discipline. He has made some real contributions but you need to take his statements with a big ol grain of salt. Keep in mind that he believes that the agaricus mafia is in cahoots with the American government to suppress his work and that his life is at risk for exposing the extreme dangers of eating agaricus. I see him as a businessman who has a convincing pitch.

Dude, the mold is still there. The fact that you managed to get some sickly looking fruits out of that cake doesn't change that.

Pins look thinner than typical imo. And all that mold you showed before is still just below the surface waiting to come out.

:picard:
P. cubensis (what we call a "cube" for short) is the entire organism you are trying to cultivate. The organism in that photo (and yours) is unhealthy. Just because an organism can attempt to reproduce doesn't mean it's healthy.

I could keep making analogies but it's not seeming to help you understand what we're saying.

Acting like those cakes are not F’d makes you sound a bit foolish. You are happy to throw the pins in everyone’s face as a “see look how wrong you guys were”. Since you kept them around as a experiment I hope you will continue to publish the results of these cakes regardless of the outcome.

Good bad or ugly, please let us know what kind of harvest you end up with.

Have you guys actually read my post? At no point am i expressing that this is a healthy cake or anything like that. And never have i implied that i think the mycelium is killing contam. i continued with this cake only as an experiment to see if the mycelium would win the battle by producing fruits or if the mold would kill the cake eventually.

If you manage to get a print it's salvage at best, imo.

It's hard to get 0 mushrooms. The goal of cultivating is good results. So we all see a couple sickly shrooms as failure from a cultivating perspective. In the wild, cubes have crappy results trying to grow along with contams all the time.

If we're talking nature here then producing pins is not good enough. It also needs to produce spores and those spores need to reach a new substrate and continue the life cycle which it hasn't done yet. The mold is far more likely to be a winner in that sense. It's already produced spores and now it has released them into the environment.

I get it though. It's amazing to find pins growing in something you've long considered garbage that needs to be disposed of. I think the real issue here is when desperate newbs see this shit it gives the impression that maybe they should hold on to their contaminated stuff just in case and cause themselves more problems as a result.

Well said.

Also, @OP, I know you probably don't have much exp, but those pins are definitely small and skinny. They are doing what an infected substrate usually does. This is pretty common, and I mean if you call it a success to you, cool stuff, but to me you could do so much better. Let me see if I can find some examples..

compared to healthy fruits..

Telling those people that this is a successful grow after their hard work to make a sexy grow is pretty much scoff worthy lol. Like said, it's a testament to the fungus's resilience really. Lol yeah I'd be lying if I said I didn't do this before, so I know I've been there. It's also why I know for a fact the myc just covers it. You can see this on agar when it colonizes over a mold. Looking under the petri dish, you can see the big nasty fuck there chillin under the myc. It's indeed cool, and makes me really shocked at how mycelium can tear through lots of stuff. Still though, my overall experience has shown that the things produced generally aren't worth the potential risks at the end of the day. But, if OP gets what he wants before it molds out, should be fine.

Wow.. i really dont think that was the point. Probably why OP feels so misunderstood.

Its just show & tell and everyones ragging on him about things he probably already is aware of.

1 fruit is a success as the interior is ready contam free clone material.

Not only that but some people live in places where the air is laden with spores and already have mold active in the house, meaning to say proper hygene in a contained area  will always beat trying to obessively get rid of household mold.

How do people think mushrooms grow in the wild?  They cohabitate in substrate with other organisms.

No one calls wild found fruit sad because theres a pan ant and and some trichoderma on the same cow pattie.

Just seems to me OP found it interesting and unexpected to see the resilence of the organism. Yes he knows its contaminated.

Everyone will do what they want to with their own stuff. Its not up to us & its not going to kill him

Who ever said have fun with it see what happens, i love that attitude.

While you have a nice attitude, there is some flaws here. Is it a coincidence that when you see trich, you suddenly start to see it more and more? Purposefully growing with a risky jar is like gambling a lot with very little return. Literally could ruin potential future grows for less than 3 grams. You can't expect people to be ok with this.

In the wild, a mushroom drops billions of spores. Very few will actually propagate the next generation. It's a massive struggle out there. Home cultivation can be nothing like this, and is why we can show the difference between a healthy fruit and a struggling fruit. In fact, if we were to purposefully introduce contams into the jars, guaranteed, it will eventually become impossible to grow in the given environment. Unless we're willing to make thousands of jars at once to maybe get one or two successful grows.

Also lastly, the op did seem like he didn't know the difference between healthy fruits and struggling ones. I posted pics to help out with figuring it out, as well as explained the standards needed to get a better grow. (aka start a new project and aim for the top) I know he didn't ask for it, but it's just me trying to help.

Still fucked, unfortunately. I will get some fruits, but the cubensis will loose. Best I can do is stifle sporulation and keep it away from my main grow.

Fucking congratulations for dumping on a mold cake. Did you SEE those original pics? This is an awesome thread, nut in yer eye

My main sticking point with this was calling it success. Like I said before, it's salvage at best and getting 0 fruits is kinda hard to do. I've had to top fruit bad jars as well to get a print and continue a variety; but I'd never call it success, more like mitigated losses.

Someone else pointed out, if these kinda posts go unchallenged, then in a few months some newb will dig it up and think "oh myc CAN beat out the mold" and hold on to a horrible jar.

Despite sounding like I'm "dumping shit" I would sincerely like to see the op actually grow, and I'm sure they could do it well if they really tried.

Sounds like an imaginary argument. Did the OP even use the word success or try to debate this with you? Probably not, even if he did nobodies interested in what you define success as except you.

People always say they're trying to save the noobs by bashing this kind of stuff but its a secondary motivation at best most of the time. More like justifying poor behavior.

You'll notice nobody once asked the OP what his procedure was, or even determined whether he had poor sterile technique or not. Or answered the questions he asked about growing, all just shit dumping from what I saw, if there was any education taking place it was well hidden between heaps of shit. Everybody gets contam jars. This whole thing is a larf.

My problem is simply him saying that the cubes won. Won is definitely a pretty subjective term but I do tend to view it in the same vein as success. Now success is also a subjective term but in my book a few weak fruits is not a success. If the OP was setting the parameters of success as obtaining a fruit for printing purposes so as to preserve the variety, then cool. Maybe I missed that. But in terms of this being a successful cube grow in terms of yield, he may need to re-evaluate his rhetoric.

Now we're just purely focusing on word choice? You know full well that all he meant by "won" is that the mycelium permeated the medium

Surely this is all satire.

This debate comes up time to time in various forms and the communities response to it always makes me ashamed to be associated with this website, truly.

This discussion was almost entirely semantic from the beginning. I'm pretty sure any questions that OP asked were answered. I totally heard what they were saying and simply went about explaining why the community had an issue with what they were saying. Come to think of it this reminds me of our discussion on using proper terminology   through a lens of subjectivity of course, but I think that was made clear enough.

This is one of the problems with communication through text, there is no inflection, no body language, no audible tone. Things get lost in transcription

Maybe the cubes didnt won by your definition to "winning" in general but imho they met the criteria for winning according to what this experiment was all about. that is where the misunderstanding comes from. It never was about yeild, i never said or implied that. But i will weigh them for consumption so let me know if you`re curious about the end result.

Tanks man. Well i dint actually try anything hard, i just kind of went with it. The reason for this "grow" was because i found a syringe in my apt that belonged to the previous owner. It was found in a dirty corner in a room  when we cleaned out after him. i didnt know what the syringe was so i was going to toss it, but after googleing the label it led me here, and after the contam and re-discovery of the mycelium growth the experiment begun :P

Question about my cake with mold inside. info would be much appreciated! pics [Re: ThePinMan]
    #25887234 -

They grow fast and it is soon time to do the first flush. I was wondering should i redunk in cool water to rehydrate the cake or would that just feed nutrition to the mold inside causing the mold to break through? If so, should i just bag it and store it in the fridge over night to induce pinning for flush number two? And what about all the pins that have not matured, is it okay to leave them on or should i pick them before i continue with one of the procedures metioned above ? And if you look at one of the stems in the cluster area, i scraped my nail lightly to se how fast it would bruise, it bruised from normal to blue and then the blue just got darker and darker all the way to black in maybe 10 seconds. is that normal ? i know blue is normal but black ?  cake as of now:

Dunk it once you've harvested everything. Take them as their ready, the one with the broken veil is ready. Blue bruising is normal and can appear very dark. Also, use the edit post button instead of octuple-posting

Those are primordia, they are fine to dunk. Octuple-posting is posting not just twice in a row, but 8 times, with no posts from other people in-between (if there were 24 hrs between posts it would be fine). The main issue is that it bumps your thread, which isn't fair to other people's threads.

There's an edit button on each of your posts. Every time you hit the quote button, it adds it to the quick reply at the bottom, so you can quote multiple people at once. You can also open another tab and quote from other pages, etc., and just copy the output into one reply.

Back to the semantics thread

One of my favorites is when people say "the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result." See that in the dictionary did you? You may want to check again

Yawn. People who are satisfied with sloppy work and moldy substrates will never listen. Pushing people to improve their work and do better is what I like to do. I notice that I never see pics of any worth from those champions of moldy substrates. Show me a good canopy with a high level of BE and I might take notice. But for me fruiting space is too limited and my time too precious to dick around with uncontrolled and ultimately worthless “experiments.” At the end of the day it’s not the champions of mediocrity that I’m looking to convince. It’s the new people and the lurkers whom I’m looking to instil a sense of pride and good work ethic in. Those who are satisfied with shit and corner cutting obviously are happy with being mediocre. I couldn’t give a fuck about them, it’s their grow and their time.

I agree that the myc def didn't win, but for finding a syringe for free, probably buying a mason jar for 99 cents, some brf for a couple bucks, nice little experiment or whatever you want to call it to kill some time.

People did get crazy serious in this thread though lol.

The amount of salt in this thread is making me thirsty. Dude fucked up, rolled the dice, came up with some questionable results.

This definetely shouldn't be standard practice, for those wondering if they shouldn't toss their gross contaminated jars.  Toss them.  It's not worth it.

But OP be like :tryharder:

I’m happy he has some fruit. I always am glad when people get mushrooms. But I also know how easy it is to get burned by contams, and how long they can fuck up your grows in the future. I simply cannot endorse it on principle. If that makes me a salty hater so be it.

Well now I've never heard this talk of actual experience with such things fucking up future grows.

It can plague your SAB work? Wouldn't have expected that. Or just pasteurized open air subs?

But remember he stated it was just a spore syringe the previous home owner left behind and he was doing it as kind of a fuck off experiment and had zero interest in mycology in the future.

Which in his defense I def understand,it's a super time consuming hobby. Even me personally,I only do it during the colder months of the year, during the warmer months who wants to be in the house, there's to many activities to do.
Shit in all honesty I'm not sure how alot of the people on here have the time to do the projects I see going on in posts on a daily basis. For me during the winter just going to work, gym, indoor house work/projects,and spending time with the wife, I barely have time to do the shroom thing.

That's awesome OP. Had some grows myself that a lot of members here said to toss, but ended up growing out fine. In fact, all of my patches of cyans, azzie, and subs outside that are all massive had horrible contams inside, and ended up still persevering. People here take this mold thing a bit too seriously.

Huge sporeloads or floating mold fragments can take over healthy substrates. It’s not the end of the world to have a spot of mold show as long as it doesn’t get outta hand. But I had a friend who I was mentoring not take my warnings seriously, he ended up with a huge sporeload. Took months to get the levels back down to reasonable and had dozens of clean subs trich out. Now that was an extreme case but, it’s never good practice to allow contamination to persist.

Exactly. Introducing a spore load can and will make things much harder to grow in. Where before you can grow fruits, even with some questionable jars.. After a sporeload you need to be impeccable. Guaranteed this little experiment wouldn't work in a high spore load area. Theres a reason i said this before.

Mad Season said:
While you have a nice attitude, there is some flaws here. Is it a coincidence that when you see trich, you suddenly start to see it more and more? Purposefully growing with a risky jar is like gambling a lot with very little return. Literally could ruin potential future grows for less than 3 grams. You can't expect people to be ok with this.
