2 out of 12 brf jars succeeded. Best way to fruit?
    #25822788 -

My fruiting chamber seems a bit overkill now...what’s the best way to fruit just two cakes?

Side note: one of my jars is slightly more  off-white to beige compared to the other. Any idea what that might indicate?

Probably dry.

And do the humidity chamber tek. It's a shoebox with wet coir in it. And u just put the cakes on top like a sgfc. It's just smaller, and better IMO.

I would say either fruit invetro ( https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=24981864&page=0&vc=1#24981864 ) or shred to bulk. If you shred to bulk you'll want to go looking into shoeboxes. Just take your fully colonized cakes, use a cheese grater, and mix it together with coir in a shoebox. No dunk/soak. For coir use these instructions: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24077162#24077162

Yea actually go with that. Shed to bulk!!!!

Thanks! I think I’ll try the in jar method just because it’s my first time and my patience has grown thin with extra steps haha.

Currently, I’ve washed the cakes, tossed them back in the half pint jars, added a new layer of vermiculite, sprayed it moist, and tossed a sandwich-sized ziplock bag overtop. I’ll spray once or twice a day as needed...is that it?

Pretty much. U should only have to mist once every day or 2. If u have to mist more, try to restrict air a little more some how. Like zip the bag tighter. But yea that's it.

One is probably contaminated. The color of the mycelium should be nearly identical.

Go on fruiting them but if one feels noticeably squishy compared to the other or breaks apart easily I would toss that one now.

Use the smell test when birthing each and every jar.  Mushroom mycelium should smell like fresh mushrooms.  If it smells like dirt you have mold.  If it smells like a garbage can, you have bacteria.

So, if it just smells like mushrooms, it means u don't have either? Specifically asking about bacteria.. alot of people say jars are bacterial on here just because the m yceliu is dense.. But I have a hard time believing.

I've had plenty of spawn that smells like fresh mushrooms still have bacteria to some degree. Thick mycillium, grains with that wet look, or one little spot that takes forever to colonize...all signs of bacteria.

Most of the time slightly bacterial spawn is still going to give you fruit, just not the flushes you would get with clean spawn. My clean spawned tubs produce several flushes before failing...bacterial spawn seems to fail after a flush or two.

Yea. I know that's the general consensus of what bacterial spawn is. But I feel like sometimes that's just from the grains being prepped too wet. I say this because every time a jar comes out too wet it looks like how u described. But jars thatre on the drier side never get that kind of growth. Which makes me think it's just too wet.

Yeah, I get what you're saying for sure...and I agree with you.

Seems wet grains do allow bacteria to get a foothold, so I'm thinking wet grains are going to have more bacteria by the end of grain colonization than dry grain.

Since I started running my oats really dry my spawn is WAY more productive. I'm guessing it's because there is far less bacteria.

Yea.. that's what I was thinking. But if it's sterilized, the excess watwr shouldn't grow bacteria if there's no living bacteria present...

Maybe I'll prep some grains extra wet sometime and just leave it unused after it's sterilized. Just to see what happens without ever opening the jar.

Pretty sure you would have to inoculate it with something. I believe there is bacteria even in the cleanest agar wedge, spore syringes, LC, or whatever. I've left grain jars for months with no sign of life.

Hmm. Interesting. Even wet grains?

And we were just discussing that in another thread. How old plates grow bacteria underneath the mycelium after awhile but looked perfectly clean at one point. I see it all the time with plates I didn't use.

Yup. I used to routinely make my oats too wet. I'd usually leave one or two sit around for a couple months. Never seen anything grow. In fact, I've inoculated jars that sat for a month and had them grow out fine. They dried up a bit and were pretty good.

Hmm. So innoculant is the culprit. Even if u think it's clean.

The real question is why did so many of your cakes fail?

If there are no bacteria. The most heat resistant bacteria are anaerobic so we can get away with shorter sterilization times that don't completely eliminate them but if the grains are too wet it limits oxygen availability and you create an environment that allows them to flourish.

More importantly the wetness makes it easier for any aerobic bacteria that survived to spread and gives them more opportunity to grow by slowing colonization. Sure ideally there would be none surviving but that's not always the case.

So yeah there needs to be bacteria present but some bacteria being present isn't necessarily out of the ordinary, at least not for our homemade spawn.
