Aromatic fungi
    #25786990 -

I cloned a store bought shiitake. I am using a 150g. Sweet potato extract, 5g. Sucrose, 10g. Agar, 500 mL. Distilled water recipe. Mycelial growth stains the agar a light brown. I have had some problems with contams and I believe its due to the fact that I am using expired petri dishes. This particular dish is very interesting. I already cloned the shiitake from it to a new plate because it had 3 different contaminant fungi growing in the plate. The curious thing about it is that if one opens the plate the sweetest smell comes out of it. The smell is almost identical to the smell of Ilang Ilang. Has anyone experienced something similar? I am suspecting that the smell is produced because of the competition going on between the different fungi, but it may be due to some other reason. This could even have commercial potential.

It's almost certainly a bacterial contamination producing that sweet smell.

This thread was moved from Advanced Mycology.

Reason:
Agar work and cloning are cornerstones of mycology not advanced practices.

Expired dishes don't spontaneously contaminate unless their packaging is compromised. Looks like you introduced a couple contaminants during the cloning procedure

There is nothing looking bacterial. I find it very curious. I bought a lot of expired petri dishes and some of them have the bag puctured. I am working on a home flow hood because I find working in a still air box extremely uncomfortable.

I will try to clone all 3 fungi alone and together to see if the smell is replicated.

Why not just transfer from the dish you have and clean up your culture. I mean I would have done the transfer days ago but yea..
Nvm re read you did already.

There's two contaminant molds growing. If you introduced one contamination the possibility exists that any other contamination could have also gotten in at the same time.

Found this. Aparently there are certain fungi and certain yeasts and molds that can produce aromatic compounds that can be used in industry. There is even a process where Aspergillus nigrum produces a vanillin precursor and then a basidiomycete converts it to vainillin. Interesting stuff.

Shiitake have a very aromatic mycelium.
