perhaps he felt in
a very difficult spot.
Thus he resorts
to ambiguity;

a very difficult spot.

So it strikes me as him taking a breather,
and being in an existentialist sort of mood,
And shifting the problem to the listener.

A wise but sneaky move, perhaps.

Of course, later he himself
who also said:
“it’s only peoples games you have to dodge”,
and was very concerned with personal freedom,
became a serious Christian for some years.

One can only wonder,
about his wonder,
when he considered the irony,
after recovering.
