I agree. It looks ugly as shit, and nothing like all the healthy spawn I'm used to seeing. Into the trash it goes. On a happier note, I'm about to harvest my 2nd shoebox, "treasure coast". Lots of very tall fruits. Some of my other boxes, the dub tub is hardly tall enough, they are pushing at the roof.

Sure if you're talking about spontaneous bruising that would be a bad sign but consider what OP said. He said they were completely white before he shook them and the discoloration only appeared shortly after shaking them. That doesn't leave much room for doubt that in this case it is bruising and that it was caused by trauma, not dehydration or a contaminant.

Why is it then that the jars that bruise when shaken are almost always bacteria ridden? Trauma doesn't do jack shit to clean jars. Bacterial jars bruise all the time AFTER shaken. Before then it's white AF with creamy cottage cheese looking mycelium.

This is a telltale sign op has bacteria. If we look at the shit recovery, it's quite clear there's bacteria in there.

Also i notice on tubs big blue bruise patches a day before that same spot turns to a mold patch.

Post shake with and without flash. Here is how it should look

I have alacabenzi that bruis from germination, on agar and all, but I also have some Aa+ that doesn’t bruise on grain. It’s just genetics

I had some ape jars that all bruised blue after a shake. :shrug: it freaked me out. I've had horribly bacterial jars that didn't bruise. I've actually never seen any other variety bruise from a shake. My my apes do it. They all recover and fruit fine. I'm actually fruiting 2 minis right now with jars that bruised when I shook them

No pics no proof right?:lol: yeah I’m working on AA+ right now so alacabenzi is in spore storage. Maybe sometime I’ll make a thread on it. Why would the mycelium produce psilocybin in the presence of bacteria ? It would make more sense to me that the psilocybin would be present before hand

Ape is a different story lol. The fruits bruise blue basically. And yeah not every bacterial jar bruises. I'm just saying on here there's only ever been 2 causes for bruising when people post them. They're either dry AF, or bacterial AF. I've literally never seen them bruise normally. In the case of this op, it's clearly bruised from bacteria.

I mean these guys know what they're talking about. I'm just stati g that I've never seen any of my grain jars bruise except for ape. So :shrug: and trust me, I've had more than my share of bacterial jars :rofl: never seen them bruise tho.

Bruising has nothing to do with psilocybin/potency. You can have fruits that don't bruise and knock you out, fruits that don't bruise and are utter shit, fruits that bruise that are potent as hell, and fruits that bruise that are weak af. Every grow I've ever had shoes that bruising is never the indicator. I gave you links to look at where bruising was discussed at length. The most likely reason for bruising is enzymes breaking down quinones, a pigment found in psilocybes.

The blue in all likelihood has absolutely nothing to do with psilocybin. No evidence besides 40+ year old guesswork close to 50+ now has pointed to that hypothesis. All the evidence that's scientifically sound points to bruising having nothing to do with the actives

So what is causing the blue color if it’s not actives.... seems That psilocybin/psilocin would be an obvious candidate.

What about mushrooms that bruise blue that don't contain psilocybin?

This is a bolete that is brusing blue due to enzymes breaking down variegatic acid. Has nothing to do with psilocin.


These are hygrocybe conica, or commonly called witch's hat. These are poisonous, do not eat these!! These are bruising due to enzymes breaking down L-DOPA. There's in fact MANY mushrooms that bruise, and can make a whole array of dyes.
