I just wanted to say that I read all the links and info about bacterial spawn and bruising and potency and dehydration and melting points and vitaminc/abscorbic acid etc etc.  and I get it..  and I'm down with the quinone hypothesis for color change ~ blue bruising.

That took an hour or so but I learned a lot. Very interesting on the mushroom dye color spectrum too.

I just felt that I needed to acknowledge Mad Season for defending the science and sharing the knowledge even though it must be frustrating to have to keep doing it. And the other TC's as well for sure.

I still don't get the double bond wavelength thing but that's ok. It's chemistry or physics or biology knowledge I don't have yet. Almost sounds like some depak chopra (whatever his name is) shiat! lol

Every solution has concentrations of particles which absorb certain wavelengths of light. You can measure the degree of this and even calculate the concentrations of things in a solution. The tool used for this is a spectrometer. This is the study of spectroscopy. In the case of quinones, they have 2 wavelengths that get absorbed. Thus the double bond wavelength. I believe it is 400nm and 440nm?? Don't quote me on that, but I do know they are around 400-500 nm. This puts them in the violet-blue range of the light spectrum.

It's chemistry mostly xD. IMO one of the most fun forms of chemistry.

Thank you for that! I am familiar (barely) with spectroscopy use in astrophysics for detecting what things are made of. I guess it's the same thing here - or very similar. Your explanation brings both ideas into context for me. I just haven't seen/heard the wavelength idea applied - or in use like that.. Or I just didn't really get it before.

I saw some posts in other threads last night where I was so tempted to drop your links on them and point out the knowledge. But since I had barely reached this new high ground I held myself back. lol  I'm going to continue doing some reading on these subjects so I can speak more fluently on it before sharing or correcting anyone.

If I may.. I'd like to share one of my favorite images which is in the same genre of information. I actually have this image on my debit card. I've been rocking it for a few years now.

This is a telltale sign op has bacteria. If we look at the shit recovery, it's quite clear there's bacteria in there.


Spawn that bruises is a telltale sign the mycelium has entered the fruiting stage and contaminated jars often enter the fruiting stage early. Nevertheless, I have noticed jars that have been left fully colonized for weeks sometimes show bruising after using them for a g2g and the grains recover and work fine as spawn.

Anyway I think OP should have given them another day to see how well they recovered. I get that their appearance sets off some red flags and there may be some bacteria there, but assuming I'm understanding what he has said I wouldn't jump to conclusions. If using 10 identical jars the 5 spawned immediately produced ok results, then the other 5 probably would have too since fully colonized jars don't become contaminated simply because they weren't used right away but they do sometimes bruise.
