4 jars in PC as of now! 3 worries


I took my time and spent around an hour preparing the jars. First I used 300ml of verm then added 100ml of whole wheat flour. This was enough for two 10.5 ounce drinking glasses. actually they measured to 9 ounces when I poured the water out of a glass into the measuring cup before I added verm. I guess the box is off when they said its 10.5 ounces!  :confused:
so anyway I mixed another 300ml verm with another 100ml flour for glasses 3 and 4. I used 3 layers of foil, the 3rd layer not being folded. a hand towel folded into 4 fit the entire small pressure cooker. I bearly had room for the 4 jars and the glass isnt physically touching each other or the metal. the foil is touching the other foil and metal and the bottom sits an inch of water. Heres 3 potentional problems im worried about:

1. wont the boiling water inside the glasses make the inch layer of dry verm moist or wet? also could the boiling water seep thru the bottom of the foil?

2. due to the intense 15psi pressure, could the glass crack or even melt?
I heated it up slowly over 20 min, but the pressure rises the boiling point to well over 100 C.

3. will my towel burn or break? its under water but the steam escapes
slowly.

I set the timer for 45 min as soon as it reached 15psi.

guess im such a pessimist, but I always am that way  :frown:

As for your other questions, yo no se, I haven't had the pleasure of working with a PC yet. But that will change shortly. Good luck

Ill find out two things when I open the PC but I wont know if the inch thick layer of dry verm got moist and im not removing the foil to find out. even if it got slightly moist theres no flour in that area so maybe the contams will die out

I don't think it will get moist as long as you didn't pour the water to above the lids of the glasses. Just wait and see, and do your self a favor, get jars for next time (I know that you have heard this a hundred times, I've read most of your posts) But you really do need jars, It'll make it easier.

ok heres the results:

towel: crumpled but no damage.
bottom of PC: huge black discoloration on bottom. looks like
the metal burned! I cant remove the mark, will it be harmful
if I cook food in it?
Jars: no cracks, light stain on bottom that can easily be removed
but ill leave it alone for now.

It appears some water got thru even though I used only an inch of water :frown:
the foils were lifted halfway but not completely out. the intense heat also caused the water inside the substrate to boil, thus rising to the top. will they get contamed now? the upper verm is moist but not wet and no flour got in it. all 4 lids are still on as I type and am waiting for the jars to cool

try puting elastic bands round the jar over the foil. if you also put moor water in you will not burn the arse out of your PC.

You can still cook in the pressure cooker mine looked like that also. I baught it from wal-mart though and took the bitch back after I was done. My jars looked a lil mushy too but hey it happens I'll assure you they are sterile. Dude these guys are right I baught a case of 12 jars at wal-mart for 6.59 all half/pint with lids in a yellow box. I suggest you do to. remember its not to late to go out this morning and try the whole thing over again, if you still have ya spore juice.

Anything that is a cup, or a glass, or a jar, or anything that holds a liquid is measured in fluid ounces. Look at a can of soda or whatever you drink, and you should see '12 FL OZ'. I bet the outside of the box of glasses said the same thing. This is opposed to regular ounces which go by weight instead of volume.

will do that next time. does rubber burn under a PC?

does your walmart still stock them? mine is either sold out or dont carry them, I looked twice and my dad arent going there again. If the glass tek doesnt work which I see no reason why it wont, ill order jars over the net or have you ship em to me and Ill paypal.

my box said 10.5 ounce. is that supposed to be the weight of the glass? irreguardless of what it said, I measured 9 ounce which is very close to 1/2 pint :laugh:
as for standing water there wasnt any after I added the flour. a little steam made its way to the underside of the foil as you said. I removed the foil of one of the jars to find this out. will that one get contam? the others the foil is lose, not airtight at all!

???

You do realize that you were suppose to mix the water, vermiculite, and BRF or whatever you wound up using, in a bowl and then spoon it into your glasses right? B/C what it sounds like you did is just dump everything into the glasses so that it is layered. I sure hope you didn't do that, though it wouldn't supprise me if you did.

Edit: And, yes, if you removed the foil from one of the jars to look at it, it is now unsterile.

i dont know if you'll have the same luck,
but i tried using rubber bands to hold the foil on a few of my jars...
they were all busted, laying on the bottom of the PC when i opened it up

Try using larger rubber bands if it's important to you. The less stress the rubber is under, the better the chance they'll survive.

I mixed it in a bowl and spooned it into the jar, thanks very much :smile:
as for the unsterile, doesnt the top verm layer block contams? even when innoculating, you make 4 holes, so wont that cause contams? the jar which I removed the lid has a better chance but I hope I luck out.
