Growing in unsterile environments???
    #2391946 -

How can mushrooms grow in unsterile environments.  I guess in nature there's a whole natural process through time which allows the mycellium to thrive and pin the year after (though I dont REALLY know how this works either).  I just read about someobody gorwing mushrooms in unsterile substrate with unsterile casing, the mushrooms came out beautifully.  I'm all confused now

That is right.
If you make the difference between pasteurisation and sterilisation.
For Shiitake, Pleurotus and some other I nearly never use sterile substrate. Hot water is enough treatment. Only the spawn has to be prepared sterile.

Throw a piece of bread outside, it wont mold. Nature is crazy.

It's possible for mushies to grow in an unsterille envirinment, but chances are some bacteria will grow faster and more vigorously on the substrate. In nature this happens too, but to a lesser extent, as does the growth of mushrooms. When mushies grow in nature, the conditions don't usually allow for mushroms to grow with no competition, resulting in a lower, unpredictable yeild.

Growing mushrooms in your house, we want perfect conditions to maximize yeild. The conditions that allow this also are great for other contaminates. So, yes, mushrooms can grow in unstrerile environments, but do u want an unpredictable yeild and do you want to eat mushrooms that have grown alongside bacteria?...I don't

And believe me, anyone who has grown mushrooms even once will tell you that bacteria WILL grow on your substrate if left in optimal conditions (ie. 80 degrees, with moisture)

I think that straw and woodchips might contain substances which slow down bacterial growth? I don't know about that, but there is no sign of contamination when using substrate (straw, woodchips) soaked in hot water. I used untreated bark mulch for the shaggy mane grow experiment. It is possible, that they need microorganism such as bacteria for fruiting.

One of my professors told me that a good handful of healthy soil has as many microorganisms as there are people in the world ( around 6 billion ) Food for thought!
