I recently picked my first psilocybe mushroom after nearly three months of trial and error with good (MMGG) and bad (Shroom Wiz's GG) teks, substrates, casing methods, terraria, etc. So in lieu of my own little grow guide, here's what worked best for me:
Substrate: 1 part vermiculite to 1 part whole uncooked brown rice, saturated with water (i.e. as much water as it will hold without dripping) and boiled for an hour. The verm is necessary for even hydration of the rice grains. A 1/2 pint jar of this substrate, inoculated in the usual PF way, will reach full colonization in about 14 days. This was the best of over a dozen substrate recipes I tried.
Casing: 3/4" of saturated unsterilized potting soil / verm atop crumbled cakes atop 1" of saturated verm. My earlier casings (plain verm and "50/50") I lost to green mold, but I haven't had any problems with potting soil. How often do you see mold growing on moist dirt? Unsterilized, it seems to be at a biological equilibrium which prevents contams, particularly if it's not quite saturated with water.
Fruiting: leave the casing alone for about a week until the surface is fairly teeming with mycelium (I cut a round window in the tops of my Tang canisters, with a layer of saran wrap between the container and the lid/ring, so I can check in on my casings without opening them), then open and leave the lid off for a full day, close again and thereafter open once a day for fresh air. Do NOT mist until the primordia appear; after you have pins, mist the surface directly with a spray bottle as needed to re-hydrate the soil. The first misting should trigger an explosion of pins and a corresponding reduction in the amount of rhizomorphic mycelium at the surface. Once you can see red caps on the pins it will be about five days until your first mushroom breaks its veil.

They ARE evil. Wicked. Just look at the tortured shape of the one on the right (a PF classic). It's really pretty funny that just owning one of these little shrooms is a felony, but maybe that's because I haven't tripped yet... maybe I'll find out this weekend just what an awful evil terrible thing these mushrooms really are and why all shroomers should be arrested / shot / banished to Hell. But I doubt it.

my theory is that the chemical psilocybin is pure evil. it supposedly tells youre brain that it is youre last 3 hours (depends on how much you take) to live, and this can either be youre fun time or youre sad time. well back to my theory, i think that psilocybin is a self defense mechanism to keep that shroom alive. pretend that you are an animal and youre hungry so you eat this mushroom you see. yum, it tastes like a normal mushroom but dipped in a cows ass. now youre full, you can go back to where you live and go to sleep. halfway back to youre cozy little den you start to fell kind of numb. uh, oh, before you can get home you start feeling like youre part of the earth so you cant move, you start seeing trees form into weird shapes and elephants sitting on branches, you start running but you dont know where to go and you start seeing voltures hovering over you waiting for you to die and then everything starts to calm down. you thought that you were going to die but know youre back to normal. you tell everyone to stay away from this mushroom and so everyone does. now that mushroom doesnt have to worry about getting eaten before it can sporulate. thats my theory about shrooms and what really happens.

Can you please clarify? Do you mean 50% verm and 50% potting soil? I am looking for a casing media that won't contaminate. My last three casing attempts have failed. The first two were with 50/50 verm and peat. My last attempt was with coco fiber which provided contaminates with enough nutrition to spread completely in a matter of 48 hours. Not so pretty.

Heh, ac that sounds heavy. Can't wait to try it nonetheless. Literally; I've been planning to trip tomorrow, but last night I ate 4 abhorts anyway -- I think I felt a very mild stoning, but it may have been just the placebo effect in action. Tomorrow, the real thing...
kosmic_charlie: yes, 1 part verm to 1 part potting soil. Pick the stuff up in big handfulls after you've mixed in the water and squeeze out any excess moisture -- if your soil's too wet you WILL get mold, although it tends to be not nasty green mold but just this thin white stuff which quickly dies when you leave the casing open to the air for any length of time (necessary if you've got excess water). Let me know how you do.
