heating grow chamber
    #642831 - 05/24/02 06:05 AM (22 years, 8 months ago)

It has been almost two weeks since I made a casing out of two fully colonized jars. My grow chamber's temperature is in the low sixties and humidity is in the mid eighties. The mycelium looks good and healthy, but I think the reason why there has been no pinning thusfar is due to low temps. I don't think there is enough room in there (I am planning on birthing two more casings soon) for a fish tank heater inside a jar or cup.

So here's my plan: I am going to buy two heating pads and place them underneath the chamber to hopefully raise the temp by about 10-12 degrees, and also add more perlite and water to increase humidity, because I know it is rather low. Does this sound like it will work? How can I keep the pads from overheating the chamber?

The mycelium has been steadily overtaking my (unsterilized) casing mix (50:50). I realize this is common with Puerto Ricans, but the last thing I want is a bad overlay. I just want this casing to pin... I want some fucken shrooms! Anyway, aside from my initial question, any general advice/comments/rude remarks would be greatly appreciated.

Don't use heating pads.....pleaseeee

One of these days someone is going to burn there house down!!!

Use a aquarium heater in a bottle to raise your temp.

I'd hate to see someone get killed in a fire over using a heating pad....for growing some mushrooms!!!!

>> My grow chamber's temperature is in the low sixties and humidity is in the mid eighties.

Thats why you havent had any growth!

>>buy two heating pads and place them underneath the chamber

OK, yes this will work, but you will want to defiently put some sort of towel or 2 between the heating pad and chamber. You dont want the cakes coookin on the heating pads either, so you might wanna put them on some sort of pedistol like the wire mesh and put your perlite underneath. The warmth will really get that perlite to function better and bring up your humidity at the same time.

>> mycelium has been steadily overtaking my (unsterilized) casing mix (50:50).

IF its unsterlized, Id personally want it to overlay! it would be less prone to contams. You're just going to end up with a flat cake basically. Just let them overlay because there isint much you can do about it. Ive seen quite a bunch of good flushes from overlayed casings, so I wouldnt worry.

All in all, keep your fanning up, add that humidity/heating source and you'll get fruits!! Good luck

Roadkill,
perhaps you can help my friend as well..
he's in a similar situation, he has a rack of 15 gal tubs, 3 to a shelf..
and is looking for a good way to heat them to 85 for colonization, and then 75 for fruiting. right now he's using a large heating blanket that wraps around both shelves...

troubble is.. with the heat coming only from the bottem, he fears the bottem can get too hot, while the top is just chillin'. his fruiting temps range from 78 in the day to 68 at night... I hear this kind of fluxuatio
n is bad, and should be avoided...

so any ideas on how to raise tempreatures to a constant level with something this size? (each 15 gal tub is ~ 6-7 inches deep with straw/castings, so placing a fish heater inside is not a possability)

any help appriciated.

Sorry I don't have that kind of situation...maybe someone else does.

I have large incubators......that i heat up with submersible aquarium heaters.
maybe you could take 2 containers and stick a submersible in the bottom one with water.
You can also do this for colonizing containers filled with manure and such.

My grow room is 72 to 76 degrees.....all the time...from my furnace.
So I never have a heat problem in my grow room.

Wish I could help you more.

Heating pads suck the everything around them dry to create heat, don't use them. And you've got to get that temp higher, in the 70s at the very least, thats why growth is so slow.
Buy another container (the same exact one you bought before). Then set it up with an aquarium heater and water to set the temp to 80 or so. Then put a block of wood or something in the bottom container and place your terranium on top. This will solve your temp problems.
