I was explaining to this guy how AFOAF was growing mushrooms, and how he got the spores in a syringe. Then the guy said "couldn't you just cut the cap off of a shroom and bury it to get more growing?" Can this work? maybe not bury it but put it in substrate. would the cap just rot and cause contams?

It's not a sterile enough process. Anyways, who want to pick shrooms from a garden and grow them? Just spore print on of your caps and turn it into 5-10 syringes enough for 50-100 jars, mmmkay?

Sterility is the issue. The cap itself is not necessarily sterile, and on top of that, you would have to subject the substrate to an unsterile environment to place the cap in it (unless you have a flow hood or glove box of sorts).
