Contamination or Spore Clumps in Jar?
    #25706596 -

Inoculated 12/16/18 with GT multispore. BRF cake with standard BRF recipe 2:1:1. Incubating room temp at 73 FH. Has been consolidating for 2 days and these have been here the whole time. I don't know what to think. This is my second grow and I've never seen something that the mycelium isn't making antibiotic to fight. The entire cake looks healthy, despite this. Doesn't even have a bad smell to it. What do you more experienced Ladies/Gents think?

Edit: Changed the image to jpg so it doesn't have to be downloaded.
Edit 2: This is the only area of this 1/2 wide mouth jar that has these black spots over the mycelium. The rest is just white.

That's interesting. I've never seen a pic of black stuff growing in a jar. hopefully someone can ID it for you!

I'd bet on some kind of pin mold or Aspergillus..I'm guessing the black wasn't present at the time you inoculated?

@ Rot - Yeah man, it's got me puzzled since it started out super tiny and grew to thee bigger black splotches that are not causing signs of antibiotic.

@ Shroomspective - This was actually one of the thoughts I had since I considered these to be spores instead of black mold. They really did start off as tiny little black dots that I noticed right away and said "I'll watch over this one" - It outgrew the rest of the jars and has fully colonized in just over a week.

Considering it is possibly a pin mold or Aspergillus, what would you suggest? Birth it away from others in case it could cause problems? I am very reluctant to toss it since it isn't showing smells/signs of bad things.

To answer what you asked Shroomspective, they were not there before inoculation. Thank you guys for your comments on this so far

Clumps of spores, which are tiny anyway, would literally shrink and vanish after inoculation as they germinated..so you can be sure it's not spores..because they aren't bacteria they don't trigger the yellow metabolites as they are literally eating the mycelium..

I would not birth this, as black mold is a health hazard..empty them in the trash and start again. What you should do is start spores on agar, but if you want to stick with the hobby you're gong to need to invest in a pressure cooker before long anyway, which will enable you to do it.

Thanks Shroomspective. I'll give some side information so you can get the full picture of this current grow.

I started out PCing 12 BRF jars, full sterilization and inoculated in SAB. I noticed within a few days that some of the jars contamed with trich, noticed this guy here at the same time and monitored it. I went over my settings on my PC and realized it was set too low for pressure which I believe caused the contams. The reason I believe this is because after dialing the PC in I inoculated with LC (crap shoot I know) - But 12 days in they are almost ready to birth with no contams.

Shroomspective, assured by your word I will toss this jar out and make sure my healthy liquid culture BRF jars do not contam because of it.

Thanks again and let me know if there is anything else I missed. I know my sterilization technique is dialed in and am very fortunate that my LC is outperforming the spores

Side Note: I am going to attempt some transfers to agar plate at the beginning of this year and will post in the correct forum when help is needed.

You want to be running you PC at 15psi, vent steam for 10 minutes at the start to flush out cold air..Once that has elapsed then run for 90 minutes for BRF or 120 mins for grains

I'd def recommend agar as a pre-req to whatever method you use, as most syringes are dirty to start with. Check out the Easy Agar tek in my sig to get started

You've been very helpful Shroomspective! I am noting this in my guide I use so I can ensure the best results out of my PC. That easy agar guide is absolutely awesome. When my dishes come in I will work with them and PP5 side by side to see what happens.

Thanks again for checking into the contam for me guys
