Inhalation of contamination

Just a quickie. What is the danger involved in inhaling air from contaminated jars? I mean, if I have a few jars that are contaminated and I empty them all out for re-use, am I in danger of becoming sick from inhaling contaminant spores from mould or similar?

Well, Don't stick your nose into the jar!!!! Smell from a foot or so away and you will probably be fine. And i would do it outside....so you don't spread contams in the house.

I strongly recommend throwing away contaminated jars without opening them. The health risks just aren't worth the few dollars you will save. If you are determined to save the jars, pressure cook them first before you open them. Open them away from your grow area and away from your innoculation area, and be careful to keep from breathing in any microscopic spores (just cause you can't see them doesn't mean they aren't there). This is where a respirator and latex gloves come in handy. Don't wait too long after you cook the jars before you dump their contents. The contamintion will most likely start growing again within a few days even after pressure cooking.

come to think of it I have had a bit of a sore throat since the other day. *jk* I reckon I might take your advice guys and just turf any jars that get contaminated. Only problem is that jars are so damn expensive. Does anyone know of a place in Aus to get filter discs or filter bags?

You will probably be safe opening the jars under water with 10% bleach added. Let the jars fill with liquid and set for 10 minutes or so, then empty them out. There was another post to this affect I read this morning, though I don't remember which forum it was on.
