Social Judgement Theory (and my theory of Memetic Advantage)
    #25517517 -

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_judgment_theory

my theory of Memetic Advantage hasn't been fully assessed, but of course, this type of thing has had it's discourse within a similar theory, called Social Judgement Theory (panning into Spiral Dynamics, as well- fascinating).

some notes on Memetic Advantage:

"There is no objective truth until we can assess numbers as the building blocks of consciousness, or something furthermore. Can't have an objective truth without an objective system of measurement. Truth is subjective (as far as I can assess via the most logical means available in epistemology). Absolute truth is multifarious. Memetics proves this. Before a certain repulse factor is reached, anything that garners memetic advantage is infected unless met with resistance- in a figurative fashion, we can see that the truth is not able to be accessed in a objective way, and only a subjective way- or lest bring me the numbers."

"A meme must be met with proper resistance, lest the meme self-amalgamates (becomes self-aware) and takes over; loosing a meme in this way leads to the process of hyperneutralization, mirroring principals become one until separation."

"All it takes is one thing, one thing only: to set up a Memetic Repulse Factor to a quality of 0, to pertain to an adynamic order- this order can, and will be attempted to be forced into existence by 'Memetic Advantage'- once at 0, due to the 'feedback repulsion', those taken in will fall like chickens into the gaze of a chalk line, willingly co-opted."

these two theories align with eachother, in shared notions but only described in different terms for different prescriptive values.

PS: before one tries to summarily end this with a thought terminating cliche, this is officially a meaning-making exercise about finding meaning-making devices.

this sentence could be important, but if it is important something has to be defined, then if it has a the meaning you are confident we can look at how the theories align:

Overview

Social judgment theory is a framework that studies human judgment. It is a meta-theory that directs research on cognitive perspective, which is how you perceive the situations. The psychophysical principle involved for example, is when a stimulus is farther away from one's judgmental anchor, a contrast effect is highly possible; when the stimulus is close to the anchor, an assimilation effect can happen. Social judgment theory represents an attempt to generalize psychophysical judgmental principles and the findings to the social judgment. With the person's preferred position serving as the judgmental anchor, SJT is a theory that mainly focuses on the internal processes of a person's own judgment in regards to the relation within a communicated message.[3] The concept was intended to be an explanatory method designed to detail when persuasive messages are most likely to succeed.

Attitude change is the fundamental objective of persuasive communication. SJT seeks to specify the conditions under which this change takes place and predict the direction and extent of the attitude change, while attempting to explain how likely a person might be to change his or her opinion, the probable direction of that change, their tolerance toward the opinion of others, and their level of commitment to their position.[4] The SJT researchers claimed expectations regarding attitude change could be based on the message receiver's level of involvement, the structure of the stimulus (and how many alternatives it allows), and the value (credibility) of the source.

Social judgment theory also illustrates how people contrast their personal positions on issues to others' positions around them. Aside from having their personal opinion, individuals hold latitudes of what they think is acceptable or unacceptable in general for other people's view.[4] Social attitudes are not cumulative, especially regarding issues where the attitude is extreme.[6] This means that a person may not agree with less extreme stands relative to his or her position, even though they may be in the same direction. Furthermore, even though two people may seem to hold identical attitudes, their "most preferred" and "least preferred" alternatives may differ. Thus, a person's full attitude can only be understood in terms of what other positions he or she finds acceptable or unacceptable, in addition to his or her own stand.[11]

Sherif saw an attitude as amalgam of three zones or latitudes. There is the latitude of acceptance, which is the range of ideas that a person sees as reasonable or worthy of consideration; the latitude of rejection, which is the range of ideas that a person sees as unreasonable or objectionable; and, finally, the latitude of noncommitment, which is the range of ideas that a person sees as neither acceptable nor questionable.[12]

These degrees or latitudes together create the full spectrum of an individual's attitude. Sherif and Hovland (1961) define the latitude of acceptance as "the range of positions on an issue ... an individual considers acceptable to him (including the one 'most acceptable' to him)" (p. 129). On the opposite end of the continuum lies the latitude of rejection. This is defined as including the "positions he finds objectionable (including the one 'most objectionable" to him)".[5] This latitude of rejection was deemed essential by the SJT developers in determining an individual's level of involvement and, thus, his or her propensity to an attitude change. The greater the rejection latitude, the more involved the individual is in the issue and, thus, harder to persuade.

In the middle of these opposites lies the latitude of noncommitment, a range of viewpoints where one feels primarily indifferent. Sherif claimed that the greater the discrepancy, the more listeners will adjust their attitudes. Thus, the message that persuades the most is the one that is most discrepant from the listener's position, yet falls within his or her latitude of acceptance or latitude of noncommitment.[12]

Sometimes people perceive a message that falls within their latitude of rejection as farther from their anchor than it really is; a phenomenon known as contrast. The opposite of contrast is assimilation, a perceptual error whereby people judge messages that fall within their latitude of acceptance as less discrepant from their anchor than they really are.[12]

These latitudes dictate the likelihood of assimilation and contrast. When a discrepant viewpoint is expressed in a communication message within the person's latitude of acceptance, the message is more likely to be assimilated or viewed as being closer to person's anchor, or his or her own viewpoint, than it actually is. When the message is perceived as being very different from one's anchor and, thus, falling within the latitude of rejection, persuasion is unlikely, due to a contrast effect. The contrast effect is what happens when the message is viewed as being further away than it actually is from the anchor.

Messages falling within the latitude of noncommitment, however, are the ones most likely to achieve the desired attitude change. Therefore, the more extreme an individual's stand, the greater his or her latitude of rejection and, thus, the harder he or she is to persuade.[citation needed]

The SJT researchers speculated that extreme stands, and thus wide latitudes of rejection, were a result of high ego involvement.[13] Ego involvement is the importance or centrality of an issue to a person's life, often demonstrated by membership in a group with a known stand. According to the 1961 Sherif and Hovland work, the level of ego involvement depends upon whether the issue "arouses an intense attitude or, rather, whether the individual can regard the issue with some detachment as primarily a 'factual' matter" (p. 191). Religion, politics, and family are examples of issues that typically result in highly involved attitudes. They contribute to one's self-identity.[6]

The concept of involvement is the crux of SJT. In short, Sherif et al. (1965) speculated that individuals who are highly involved in an issue are more likely to evaluate all possible positions, therefore resulting in an extremely limited or nonexistent latitude of noncommitment. People who have a deep concern or have extreme opinions on either side of the argument always care deeply and have a large latitude of rejection because they already have their strong opinion formed and usually are not willing to change that. High involvement also means that individuals will have a more restricted latitude of acceptance. According to SJT, messages falling within the latitude of rejection are unlikely to successfully persuade. Therefore, highly involved individuals will be harder to persuade, according to SJT.

In opposition, individuals who have less care in the issue, or have a smaller ego involvement, are likely to have a large latitude of acceptance. Because they are less educated and do not care as much about the issue, they are more likely to easily accept more ideas or opinions about an issue. This individual will also have a large latitude of noncommitment because, again, if they do not care as much about the topic, they are not going to commit to certain ideas, whether they are on the latitude of rejection or acceptance. An individual who does not have much ego involvement in an issue will have a small latitude of rejection because they are very open to this new issue and do not have previously formed opinions about it.[5][6]

To change an attitude, first we must understand the audience's attitudes. Then we will see how it relates to the listeners' judgments of the persuasive messages.[14] It is also essential to judge how close or far away one's position is. The next step is to shift one's position in response to the argument made. An individual adjusts an attitude once he or she has judged a new position to be in his or her latitude of acceptance. If someone judges that message to be in his or her latitude of rejection, they will also adjust their attitude, but in the opposite direction from what they think the speaker is advocating.[15]

Sometimes, an attitude change may be incidental. In the boomerang effect, an attitude changes in the opposite direction from what the message advocates—the listener is driven away from, rather than drawn to, an idea. This explains why oftentimes fear appeals used in advertising do not work on the audience. As the threat perceived by the audience increases and the capacity to produce the desired effect is low, people will tend to do the opposite of what is advocated.[16] Attitude change can also be influenced by immediate social environment. In the interpersonal domain, people tend to shift their attitudes to align with those of their significant others. The general picture of social influence thus remains one of conformity and alignment attitudes.[17] A major implication of social judgment theory is that persuasion is difficult to accomplish. Successful persuasive messages are those that are targeted to the receiver's latitude of acceptance and discrepant from the anchor position, so that the incoming information cannot be assimilated or contrasted. This suggests that even successful attempts at persuasion will yield only small changes in attitude.[9]

Simulations
SJT has mainly been tested in small experimental settings, only rarely in more extended ways that include an investigation of opinion changes on a collective level in modeling studies. Stefanelli and Seidel[18] conducted a large-scale simulation of SJT, based on real-life data. They collected survey data from 1302 Swiss citizens, regarding their attitudes towards building a deep-ground-repository for nuclear waste. Attitudes were ranked on three scales: risk, benefit, and process. The data was fed into an agent-based social simulation. In each time-period, two random agents were selected to interact. Their opinions on these three topics (risk, benefit and process) were compared. If they were in the latitude of rejection, the opinions were pushed away from each other; otherwise, the opinions were pulled towards each other. The results showed a four-opinion cluster solution, representing four types of opinions: opposing, supporting, ambivalent, and indifferent.

ego involvement    -  issue involvement
----|-----------------------|-----------
not ego involved    -  distant from issue

some kind of geometry - maybe some kind of math - hard to guess what the metrics would be.

the results would be useful in mass manipulation, marketing, and propaganda.

These two arguments align in their ability to effect change;

Memetics: Group dynamics persuaded primarily on the level of the unconscious.

Whereas SJT seeks to align thru persuasion on the analytical level.

the analytical level is just the level of symbolic logic, resonant in the framework of formula's which are also memes. aren't formula's and 'proofs' memes? i think so. what about you? :awesome:

---;under the presumption and predication that they are solely that which effects change.

but this is the distinction i'd like to touch on: in memetics you are not only able to effect change with 'bullshit' (aptly denoted), but you also can structure truth in-and-around memes (i call these 'Icons' -- formula like that found in propositional logic, for example, can become as Iconic [in this sense] as any myth [that is to say, the "truth" in myth], or for more direct analogy, the programming logic that constructs the system [under layers over layers, ect] that we use to communicate these ideas here, this is replicated through Iconic means, ie, a Computer, a Keyboard (everything involved with these things), Language in toto (break it down however you wish- i'm just saying these are analogical examples).

so when something is memetic in the sense of a greater metameme of a memeplex (science leads to results, but unbiased from irrationality and non-materialist ideation, only strict double-blind proofed models (for group/sociological study), or empirical data defines what these results mean, epistemology is settled, we can only expect to study results as they come, and can come to no apt conclusions [save by graceful luck of the intellect on a guess that'd be presumed false until proven regardless], and the human condition is based in it's complexity, the chaotic dynamics of societal motive systems, and ect, and this is Truth, because we have reason to trust in our predilections that this is the most effective, rational [therefore safest], and most accurate and humble and truthful, and agnostic, perspective to learn and know about sources of knowledge and information- our brains are vast repositories for learning and we can connect the dots as we go along, but the utmost objectivity is the goal- to treat subjective things with objective importance only regards proofs and formula, statistics, social norms [which are also influenced by different memeplexes? and herein we find the paradox- let's continue]; these norms, medians and means, of these complex dynamic systems, economies, everything, are all materially contrived...ect ect ect)

so when something is contrived as such...it's a meme. it's just a really complex one.

I'm referring to the distinction between what we readily accept as on the subliminal threshold of awareness as being 'right', such as might the American youth to the advent of denim in their lifestyle, and the transformation of the meme by raising the assumption into analytical awareness whereupon a less constricting sports attire may be substituted.

Beer, cigarrettes and Christianity could be examples of memetic transformation thru culture on the subliminal level that can be transcended when raised into contemplative analysis.

i think i hear what you are saying.

from my findings, this would fall into the realm of the Conceptual. now, i supposed a way to reframe this properly, from my perspective (i think i may have got a bit off track, trying to expound on these ideas for myself, too- oops)...i'd say that these Conceptual Analytical Awareness' are individual in and of themselves, and as "facts" are held, but as holes are to be leapt out of -- when "facts" are "holds", the memeplex holds as "fact" and if not certain, as an 'uncertain hole', or if so certain, than it holds as "Fact" but that of 'facts' that can change [if we are certain that facts do change and can be holes, if not held up to certainty involving scrutiny {obviously}...] (keep in mind the notion of "Further Facts"); but if scrutiny is not applied [acute and close observational methodology and verification- even according to the most rigorous of empirical or analytical or speculative delineation of certainty and the unreal], even the most fundamental observations must be taken on a kind of presumption that everything is operating coherently as it is usually observed- with this, in mind with the vagaries of fallibility, plurality, and perspective- it seems there is a slim probability of outcomes in which- even with strenuous resources (see: CERN) that we can experimentally bring forth- we cannot duplicate these outcomes with the application towards truth-values that rely on certainty rather than probability, and that provide a verification to the criterion of these outcomes, rather than confirmation of potential outcomes to their degrees of potential result on a probabilistic scale.

to me, these are "potential outcomes", and forms of truth-value assessment that are predilections based on the Preliminal Scaling from Conceptual Individuality [eg 'separate minds'], which would denote the necessity of a theory of justification, to mold throughout with- another place for the realm of memes to overlay itself.

i favor contexualism, as it's a very perspectivist standpoint. but really, the infinite regress seems...insuperable.

Everything in consciousness is through a frame of reference.. which measures the rate of apt upholstry or otherwise the house of perceptions that go and rate the sense of your own homliness.... How much do you wanna be at home? How much do you want to be comfortable..? (In your own skin).. ideas(logos) of awareness are valid.. in the coming age of Deuteronomy 14:28

Quote:
At the end of three years[The triangulation of this message]thou shalt bring forth all the tithe[Gods taxes or otherwise demands]of thine increase the same year[Your increae intellect], and shalt lay it up with the gates[which is this frame from which we write down messages to each other

So it says to bring your writing to the forefront of this forum.. to show your perceptions makes you holy!

It seems to me that all judgements are based on perceptions and knowledge.. but both are stored within the body.. the DNA strands.. both x and y.. coordinates on your path to becoming whole! Holiness is about wholeness.. which is your virtue and birthrite.. The messiah that I am blesses time.. in its infinite ranges and temperments.. You know time changes depending on what your doing.. or at least the perception of it does.. you can create and stop time with your own garment of choice.. you can still be beautiful in time.. and out of time is where ugliness belongs.. out of time, out of sight..

But creativity trumps the truly bespoken model of beauty.. which is about having the right curves and straight lines in all the right places.. but being ugly is creative as well  ,!

Looking at the numbers: In simulation of the Social Justice Theory we could note the youths who wear denim as a matter of course without arriving at that choice thru a 'risk, benefit process'(1) with the associated 'four-opinion cluster solution, representing four types of opinions: opposing, supporting, ambivalent, and indifferent'.(2)

Yes, all arguments could produce a memetic result and all memes are arguments but how the persuasion gets thru to us, on the conscious or subliminal level, could be the deciding factor that separates the two theories of social change.

I think that the math is incomplete at best, and that each one of us is both the matrix and the jealous god.
the meme's are projections and guestimates extrapolated from language and linguistic evolution patterns.

also - I am not exactly a socialist. I am too anarchistical for that, but I am not like any self professed anarchist, just don't like being told what to do when I am busy enough already; mostly a "do your own thing" kind of person.
