Can logical reason take the place of emotional judgement?
    #1614971 - 06/06/03 05:16 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I have always had a rather "repressed" emotional side. Actually it's probably about as repressed as emotion can get  :smirk:

Now, this doesn't bother me one bit. It is simply the price I think I've had to pay in order to develop logic and reason to the extent that I have. INTP - my Feeling function is repressed.

"Emotional judgement" - using one's emotions to make decisions - is not something I fully trust in myself, because of the obvious immaturity of my emotional self. So instead of ever using my emotions to make a decision, I use logic and reason 100% of the time.

Now the question:

Do you think that logical judgement can take the place of emotional judgement? See there are times where my logic is shaky - usually when I have to make a decision dealing with someone else's emotions - but I am still unsure about using emotional judgement (because I'm not sure that I can "trust" my decision in that case).

I have never had a problem using logic in place of emotion...but it has caused problems for other people I've dealt with, whom I'm sure are much more used to using their emotions.

Is it worth changing? Should I sacrifice Clarity for the sake of Empathy?

Why sacrifice?
Why not use your emotions to assist your logical judgement processes or vice versa?
that's what i try and do anyway, maintain balance

For me, emotions are shortcuts.
Sometimes I take them... sometimes I take the long way.
Sometimes I split the difference.

Yes, it's all about balance. All of the right decisions I have made in my life, weren't always logical. Or emotional. Nor were they always right.

No. We are beings of both reason and emotion. Both have their place. The difficulty is learning how to balance them and which to give precedence to in certain decisions. It is my opinion and my experience that you will have less disappointments deferring to reason over emotion most of the time.

It is worth evolving and exploring other ways, try giving more weight to emotion in certain areas, but I would never totally abandon logic it should always come into play in judging your emotional investment in decisions, the consequences of your actions and their emotional rewards.

Sometimes the greatest clarity is through our emotions. I do not see it as sacrificing but embracing an aspect of your self that you may have neglected. I do not see it as an either/or proposition. You can explore emotions more deeply without abandoning reason (think of it as a lifeline if you will). Emotions may point to a goal, but reason can be your guide along the path.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

I believe emotions to be a part of who we are. Whilst it is true that if one became like the  mythological Vulcans we could avoid a lot of problems, but we would also miss out on a lot of the fun things that make life worth living... just my .02!

Balance, I think, is the problem.

My emotions tend to be an all-or-nothing deal. I'm either stuck in apathy or drowned out in emotion. I'm sure this is a result of the underdeveloped nature of my emotion - when it does show I have no real way of controlling it.

Vulcan's aren't mythological. Their fictional.

Hmm...lets see here...
"Myth:  (2)A fictitious person, story etc. "
"Mythology: (2) The study of Myths"
(Source: Random House Webster's School and Office Dictionary)

So, I suppose we're both right!
I only used the term because of the pervasiveness and longevity of the so-called Star Trek Mythos.

You know that this problem is simply a restatement of something men have felt for all of history. We're by nature more logiccal and pragmatic than women, they are more empathetic than we are. It's the source of most of the problems between the sexes.

I would just like to commend Evolving's response to the question, which inexplicably seems to have been overlooked by the other posters here. I don't think there's a better or more succinct answer to the problem.

"The difficulty is learning how to balance them and which to give precedence to in certain decisions. It is my opinion and my experience that you will have less disappointments deferring to reason over emotion most of the time."
-----------------------------

That is true. Especially in the presence of an agressive emotion like anger, or worse yet, aggravated anger: rage.

Emotions, can be powerful. They can even induce blinding... Such as being blinded by love. [ I'm sure many can relate ]

"It is worth evolving and exploring other ways..."
-----------------------------

Agreed.

This becomes more apparent once the art of Acceptance & Self Control are better learned.

After years of working with raw Kundalini energy, i am now able to channel it into emotion. For alot of my life i was plagued by depression by not being able to tune into my emotions. today i can say that our bodies are just receptors for energy, and that with practice, we can control our emotions, move into heightened experiences of oneness with our surroundings, even see and manipulate kundalini with time. i myself am starting to be able to see auras, and i have a witness that will attest to mild telekenetic displays, there is a whole world of possibilities just below our perception, right under our noses, that aint no metaphor either.

There is no such thing as a "mild" display. Any display at all would be earth-shattering and herald in a new paradigm of mind and matter. Let me guess though - you can only display your "powers" to non-skeptics.
