I don't think that's a valid argument. Can't city workers go on strike? Are municipal agencies immune from mismanagement? If governments can provide the service at a lower cost and more efficiently, why would they even have to enforce a monopoly? Do the shortcommings of human nature suddenly disappear once people enter government?

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

This is a very tricky question indeed. A personal definition of the terms is needed to answer the question.

If you follow maslows hierarchy, you are conformed to have security as the number one option (right above physical needs). Where is freedom then? That might be a personal need, as to attain peace. Maybe the question becomes desire... then necessesity... then you delve into a ton of other questions. At least for me.

Thats what i thought of when I read your post, tis why i pointed out maslow :wink:. This issue has troubled me a lot.

What is "security"? There is no 100% safety. Peace for me is like rain, sometimes it pours, sometimes it drizzles, sometimes it never comes at all.

Wow - only 7% for peace, myself included. I'm curious about exactly which freedoms do the freedom lovers think would not exist by default in a truly peaceful society? Maybe I should put it this way - I can't think of many non-free peaceful societies, but I certainly know of at least a few non-peaceful, free societies. While Peace clearly implies freedom, freedom certainly doesn't imply peace. Go figure.....
