Can you guess what I picked?

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Freedom, then Peace, then Security, all three of which Bush has failed to give us.

I'd rather have more peace than more financial freedom.

Low taxes are good, but government does play a vital role in many sectors of public life, in my view.

The freedoms I am voting for:
Freedom of religion, speech, assembly
The freedom to vote as a choose and have my vote counted
The freedom to determine, within limits, what happens on my property (real-estate)
The freedom to put what I want in my body, and persue whatever sexual practices I wish, privately
Freedom from arbitrary imprisonment or detention

I'm sure I could think of more, but this is a pretty good list to start.

What do you mean by "peace"? That one's country is not at war, or that one doesn't live in a war zone? Since Americans have never had to experience the latter, I don't think most of us even know the true meaning of the word "peace"--just how precious it is.

"Security" is also extremely vague. You can never be 100% secure. A government can claim to give you security when all they've done is "protect" you from non-existent "threats" or when they've just gotten lucky and the real threats out there haven't had a chance to strike yet.

Finally, how can one enjoy "freedom" if one is living in a war zone and can worry about nothing other than survival? One could have complete freedom from government rules, etc. in such a case, but in return one becomes a slave of circumstances.

Words, just words. You're asking us which word we like the sound of best, nothing more.

So, let me ask you guys. What type of freedom were you voting for?

Freedom from taxes?

Yep.

Quote:

Freedom from governmental coercion?

Yep, well actually freedom from the initiation of force or coercion. (That would include freedom from taxes, for if coercion wasn't involved, revenue for the state wouldn't be called taxes)

Do you believe any level of government (Fed, state, local) should be able to own a business that generates revenue?

So words do not have meaning?

That depends on the context. If all of the parties to a discussion can agree on a meaning, then the word has that provisional meaning for the duration of that discussion.

Silence can also have meaning--an infinite number of meanings, in fact, depending on the context.

The contextual nature of meaning is one of the reasons why most debates end in deadlocks of misunderstanding and mistrust.

Do you believe government should be able to enforce a monopoly on the product or service that it uses to generate revenue?
