does negative world opinion towards US aggression actually have the opposite effect..of further polarizing and strengthening american wrath?...if you voted yes..then what should other nations do to temper US belligerence..other than keep to their mouths shut?...

Americans tend to be too thick-headed to accept the possibility that the rest of the world might actually be right about them, so they rationalize in their mind that others must just be jealous of our freedom or our prosperity. I don't know what other countries might do to stop this. Maybe spike our reservoirs with LSD so as to temper our egos.

To further silvers comment on Americans and the rest of the world: Most Americans have not travelled to other countries (Canada doesn't count). Not experiencing other cultures first hand combined with the arrogance that can accompany ignorance causes many of the dangerous 'knee-jerk' reactions we see in the US.

2. other than the previous governments of afghanistan and iraq, and the current ones of north korea and iran, who else has the US government been belligerent towards?

(not very well put here but I assume you mean unifying, as opposed to polarizing, American will)

As an answer to the basic question, I think that on a great many questions the people will certainly listen thoughtfully to international debate. However, given great provocation, the people will unify and not become sucked up in the great slough of inaction that has befallen many European nations. Who may have their own agendas (see illegal oil contracts signed by Russia and France with Iraq, war for oil indeed). In this area see William Safire in yesterday's NY Times about corruption in the U.N. over the oil for food program.

I don't see the international community as being monolithicly opposed to our policies as you would like to portray.

in response to my own post..i too have cast a "yes" vote...as for the second question..given the following facts ..

1) bush will be re-elected...corollary ..john kerry is a dead-man-walking...
2) further acts of aggressive warfare will inevitably follow...
3) the american ppl will overwhelmingly support the war...
4) nobody counts that doesnt support the war..in america or elsewhere...

i would say that other nations should not attempt protest against the war itself..but rather..they should initially fall in line behind bush..if they want to be in any position..however tenuous..to influence US planning so as to limit the scope of the war..and speed up its resolution...

Do you honestly believe that there is a similarity in the percentage of KKK members in this country and the percentage of Palestinians who fervently believe the Jews should be eliminated. Haven't seen too many KKK suicide bombers lately.

I dont believe that other nations not backing us has any positive infuence on our resolve. If all the nations supported us i think we would be much more eager to be "belligerent". I disagree with that word though. It kinda suggests invasion to take over such as colonial britian may have done or such as Iraq tried to do in the presidents fathers years. As to what other nations can do to effect our decisions... they can get something we want. The reason we dont listen to certain countries is for the same reason that you wouldnt take financial advice from a beggar on the side of the street. When these other countries come to us with something other than their needs, opinions, and culture, then they will have a voice. As for americans experiencing other countries cultures, i dont think there is any country in the world that is more accepting and tolerant of other cultures and ideas. this was kinda a quick ramble... but yah.

Beautifully said... I know quite a few palestians and israelis, as I go to an international school, and I would say that neither of them want any more suffering. They are both so damn tired of living in fear and threat of death all the time... while certainly there are extremists on both sides, they don't represent the average population... at least not the youth.
