Well the real question is whether or not they believed she was armed with a firearm and if so would they have been able to keep them from grabbing it.

Cuz I'd believe a shot to the knee cap at a dozen paces pretty quickly removes the threat of a knife wielding attacker. Might be crippled for life but it's definitely not murder.

"Mental illness training" has fuck all to do with this.
The question is whether or not they used excessive force to control the threat. And to me the obvious answer is yes.

Serious question, due to not being entirely in touch with the US legal system
at what point is pepper spray considered acceptable force,
and at what point would permanent crippling be considered acceptable force
the story already mentioned lawsuit for the shooting -- would that be a risk
if the cops just showed up and pepper sprayed people right off the bat?
could be pretty cool with more videos akin to 'don't tase me bro' and less akin to the one in OP

"I don't go out of my way to watch it, but it comes up sometimes," Andrew told reporters a few years ago. "Every time I see it, it’s still painful. People talk about the Taser as if it were nothing. Maybe some people have been tased, and they didn’t feel it. When I felt it, it was excruciating."

Fast-forward to today and Andrew Meyer lives in Florida, and works, unsurprisingly, for right wing troll Mike Cernovich.

If you've heard of Cernovich – a professional livestreamer – it could be from him peddling Pizzagate, from appearing on Infowars or from calling his detractors pedophiles online. He's also known for having a huge following of the sort of MAGA ultras who think Benghazi, George Soros and chemtrails are the cause of the world's problems.

In a brief interview with The Tab, Meyer said: "My political views are similar to my views in 2007 – I want peace in the world and prosecution for criminals in Wall Street and the military industrial complex."

Now he writes for cernovich.com about stories with breathless headlines like:

as stated, do not think that the event had to end in a shooting
it is simply difficult for me to fault someone for firing in a tense situation while being advanced on
recognize that, even with training, that is a quite different situation from shooting someone unarmed and running away

Taser is excruciating and pepperspray is terrifying agony. So are beanbags fired from a modified shotgun. They all risk permanent injury. They all risk death. They're all still far better odds than getting shot in center mass.

They've implemented for that reason.

The problem here in the US is that the police regularly use excessive force. See the man in Fredericksburg VA that had a stroke in his car. If I'm not mistaken they sprayed and tazed him despite it being fairly obvious he was incapacitated and incapable of following their orders to get out of the car.

This probably wouldn't even make headlines if it weren't now a well known problem that police officers do not know how or when to use appropriate amounts of force. The ones that use too little force get reprimanded or eventually hurt or have a suspect get away. The ones that (clearly) use too much force get a 2 weeks vacation or I think standard is one week when they have to use lethal force for their own mental wellbeing.

Lawsuits go through sometimes. Doesn't really matter to them since our tax dollars pay the settlement. Rarely are there charges and very rarely are there any convictions or employment related repercussions.

I admit this particular case can be a somewhat understandable gray area. But we absolutely must keep hammering on the issue that law enforcement in this country is poorly controlled and has little enough enforcement within its own ranks.

They need more than better training. Better training without regulations and repercussions aren't gonna change all that much.

Also, as for your question on if they'd opened with pepper spray or a tazer right off the bat, they'd probably come under fire. And maaaybe a lawsuit would be filed. But it'd be dropped. And everyone would completely forget about the case before it even made it that far.

Unless it became a trans-discrimination issue.

We had a police officer here in the county a couple years back that pulled up on a black man pumping gas. He asked for the man's licence and registration. Well he obeyed too quickly. When he opened his truck door to get his shit the officer pulled out his firearm and discharged a full clip. Or near enough. Luckily for the guy the officer was as retarded at shooting as he was at knowing when to shoot. Of all the rounds fired the truck ate all but one, that lodged in the man's hip. And none hit the pumps, thankfully. Otherwise they might've all died and we'd never know that officer flipped.

He was just scared and didn't know how to react. He was a rookie. County police did the right thing and fired him after his 2 weeks vacation and paid for the man's medical bills and truck.

The problem is people played with powers before being evolutionary mature enough.

Way too many people on the planet and far to many countries that all want alpha status.

Taught to think or taught what to think?

Am not meaning to be super selective in quoting you to misrepresent you or anything
but the above is just kind of relevant to what follows

Shroomery Story Time
:tellmeastory:

Roughly 10-15 years ago my suicidal tendencies were at their arguable worst
did not comprehend having OCD, and avoided doctors like the plague

called the suicide hotline on a few occasions
was temporarily rooming with a friend at one point
he had a BB gun (was not aware, just saw it through the doorway of his room time to time)
the lady on the suicide hotline asked me what methods of suicide were under consideration
my OCD was flaring wicked bad, so ended up just going over this long list of potential options
basically all the imagery spilling out without me knowing it to be invasive imagery
at some point mentioned the roommate's gun
and later in the call she politely informed me that the police were roughly 2-5 minutes from the house

two showed up,
both had their holsters unclipped and had their back hand a few inches from, but not on, their pistols
they started asking if I was alright, where was the gun
one examined it and we realized it was a BB gun
they were still concerned
so got taken to the ER to see the psychiatric nurse on hand for an assessment
depression, got meds for it (they made the suicidal imagery worse; quit taking them within a couple weeks
and swore off pills and doctors for like...7 years?)

have since learned a lot about OCD and how the flares of suicidal imagery can be, at least somewhat, mitigated

TL;DR
Transwoman at a point of still not comprehending her own identity
cries her eyes out while suicidal, states to have a gun
cops come, no weapons are even drawn
but was not trying to commit suicide by cop
and rather than one of the officers being left traumatized over killing me
they likely went for coffee and donuts after my trip to the ER and laughed over the BB gun

Subsequent line of questioning:
What explains the drawing of guns in the OP compared to my situation
the micro-knife they had in hand?
Was not personally armed when the officers came in
but are our police more regulated or something?
(you likely do not have any more of an answer to this than me, as it would require a comparison of the two legal systems)

I've no idea. Really don't.

I called the suicide hotline once. It was after my roommate pointed a gun to my head and told me to get out. I just wanted to talk to someone and feel like not everyone in the world was trying to ruin my life. When I told them that the guy was like "uh... Okay, do you have an address?"
Nope. Hung up, and took apart my cell phone and slept in a neighbor's bull dozer. And by sleep I mean stared out all night in a fit of paranoia. Ended up going through that whole situation alone cuz I realized basically any of the people out there to "help" me would have had my friends arrested, and possibly released on bail and ready to kill me, and have had me homeless.

There's no one you can "just talk to" about these things. Someone's gonna call the fucking police and fuck your shit up and fuck what you want or need.

The medical professionals aren't really all that much better with handling mentally ill or people with problems. The moment you get human the moment everyone around you gets paranoid.

Police have a duty to protect you and themselves. Something in their training makes them lose sight of that I think. The you part at least. There's been more than a few stories of them executing the mentally ill for no apparent reason. One man I know of was beaten to death by a squad of police officers. Kelly Thomas, all officers charged in the assault were found not guilty. He was non-compliant to the officers who responded to a call about a shirtless and disheveled man but made no aggressive moves. They threatened him when he refused to consent to a search. They attempted to arrest him and accused him of stealing mail. He wouldn't put his hands behind his back. So they beat him to death.

When paramedics came on the scene they were asked to look at the cut on an officers arm and not the man lying on the ground choking on his own blood.

I find it funny how much of a 'cool' liberal fuckshit land CA is but it seems some of the most corrupt police in the country make their home there.

In general though, it might be the authorities duty to care about you, it doesn't at all mean that they care about you. They don't care if you die. They don't care if you die in their care. They can just lie. Or at least have for so long that it doesn't matter anymore.

The police department said that that mentally ill fellow broke bones on 2 police officers in initial reports. Then they realized there was video. But the fact they lied, used clearly excessive force that left a man beaten to death, and neglected to even get him immediate medical attention meant nothing in the conviction attempt.

Definitely the kind of people I want taking care of me and my family.

Between 2005 and 11 there were 41 charges of manslaughter and murder against police (that includes Thomas's murderers) while the FBI reports thousands of voluntarily reported "justifiable homicide" from law enforcement nationwide.

I find it very hard to believe that thousands of suspects deserve to die, especially given police track records for lying.

Pretty much every case they lie. Which makes the unknown but very low conviction rate appalling. If you're innocent then why are you lying?

Eh. Apparently earlier this year an officer was convicted of manslaughter after trying to dole out his own justice and unloaded on an accused murderer in his vehicle. The suspect, who's hands were up in surrender, was severely wounded, his 6 year old boy in the back was killed.

Maybe our culture is simply more violent. I really don't know.

Mind you that last one is officers of color (both hispanic) firing on a white man. Kelly Thomas was also white and beaten to death by police officers of mixed races.

According to the WPost almost all cases of shootings that go to court involve black officers that shoot black victims.

Really pisses me off about how this has all become some kind of "George Bush don't care about black people." thing.
Black lives matter.

Yep and 6 year old autistic white boys lives don't.
