Would it be possible for the Shroomery to start a direct fund? Perhaps the Shroomery could show the world how compassionate it's members can be?

thanks for the email and PM, Wiccan_Seeker... that is a big relief for me. i've sent an email out to a friend of mine from the Maldives (she is in Norway right now, though) - i heard on the BBC that they got totally washed out, so i'm quite worried for her family.... also my ex-girlfriend has been in india for the past 6 months - i have no idea where she is, and she has very sporadic internet access, so i'm really worried about her... going to have to call her parents in Paris tomorrow morning to see if they have heard from her...

once the check i deposited today clears, i'll definitely be giving at least $50 to the Red Cross/Red Crescent....

To give an idea of the magnitude of the catastrophe: In Africa dozens of people drowned and there was great damage in Somalia, Kenya and other nations at 7.000 kilometers from where the Tsunami started In Sri Lanka alone death toll estimates go upwards of 12.000 dead. An estimated one-third of all deaths in the 10 countries are children. The CNN estimate is 22.000 deaths, other sources speak of over 25.000 deaths. Again, over a million people have lost their homes.
On a positive note the Shroomery community raised $402-$695 well within 12 hours.
Krishna, please realize India is HUGE and the Tsunami reaches several miles inland at the very most. Please keep us posted.
I will propose the idea of a direct Shroomery fundraising to the admins, but I have no idea how efficient that would be and whether such is legally allowed or feasible in another way.

As someone that was recently in Thailand at the very places that have been devastated, I'm very concerned about friends of mine that are there. God...what an unbelievable nightmare for those people that are directly affected by this tragedy. My heart goes out to all of them....

this is the first thread i go to when i check this forum....heh yeah doesn't seem like a lot of people give a toss about how tragic this situation is...
some good news (on my side at least)
friends of mine in phuket were able to contact me and have claimed they are safe (though a bit shocked). they will be flying back to bangkok tomorrow, but seem to be having trouble getting a flight back to london. as long as they're safe....

Good to see the community rallying.
Two of my sister's friends were on Phi Phi island off the coast of Phuket Thailand. Somehow they managed to survive, one was washed out to sea and knocked unconscious, and somehow rescued, she woke up in a hospital. The other was washed out of her cabin, and climbed a palm tree to safety, then spent the night up a hill. It was an anguishing time waiting for news of her, and a relief to hear she was safe. They were both incredibly lucky.
I'm donating to the red cross tomorrow...I think everybody should donate at least something...
keep this thread going guys

everyone seems to be affected by this, especially those who went on holiday to these areas....
there's news here that 200 finns are still missing, the reality of it all, they're probably dead.
- mr boO's coworker went to phuket on holiday, no text messages or phone calls back from him. everyone's worried. - close friend of ours here in helsinki, some of his family friends went to phuket again on holiday. 2 children under 10 dead, wife missing (possibly dead) but the father is alive and in the hospital
terrible terrible..hitting every community hard i bet...

my heart goes out to all of those affected. Mother Earth has a way of letting us know just how small we really are sometimes.... tragic. All she's gotta do is twitch and humanity is never the same. And it's unfortunate that given the "1st world's" attention span, most will likely forget in a week or two. The real tragedy has yet to come when the massive loss of infrastructure is truly felt. The instantaneous impact is nothing compared to that. Anyone remember how quickly the world forgot the quake in Iran? the folks on my side of the pond sure did... $50 to ICRC here and there is all good, but this tragedy has me filled with this sorrow that $50 can't mend. I read about the reports of people finding loved ones washed up on shore. I see the photos of a mother holding her dead child and just flat lose it... it's just senseless. I keep imagining myself in the shoes of someone truly affected by this and I can't come close to comprehending the sense of utter loss. I can't be a pretentious american and forget this.
And great... GWB promised aid money. I respect that, but why do I feel like he'll fuck it up? Remember, he promised all that aid to Africa to fight AIDS, but then backed out because he only wanted to support abstinence only programs and treatment programs that used american drugs that cost 3x as much. He gives with one hand and takes with the other. He's the f'ing king of bouncing good will checks.
god, life is so fragile...

my fathers coworkers are okay, we still havent heard from family friends in in phuket
I asked my father to ask his company to donate since they do so much business over there, I really hope they do!
It sounds like the relief effort is finally getting underway, with makeshift hospitals set up and such.
It just goes to show you that no matter how much money you have, mother nature has the last word

amen brother. mother nature is definitely the boss. i really feel for those who have lost or lost word of their loved ones. hopefully none of this online mushroom community have lost their lives, but i'll bet scores of us have been affected in some way. i have family in singapore and taiwan, and was very releived to hear they were ok, it must be awful to still be wondering.
