I think that may be a correlation not causation thing. Alot of gaming addicts have poor social skills and it often develops into other issues over time. Not necessarily because of the game time but where others get thrust into social situations and learn confidence and w/e they need, they stay and prefer to stay with the game. Where other people learn to deal with life they do not. It is no different than any other form of self isolation. Drugs included.

The real difference is where alot of other problems are more likely to manifest in adulthood, gaming starts in childhood and it shapes their life from then on out.

Grew up in a village of 100 people, and gaming used to be a really social activity for the around 10 of us in my age group.
When the weather was poor, and for large portions of the winter when it was bitterly cold, we would get together and game.

Then around the age of 14, got mixed up in a horribly convoluted situation where I was kicked out of school for a year because people from the next town over (we all bussed in to the city for school) started a rumor that I was going to shoot up the school (had no such plans).
Aside from being sent 2 hours on the highway to go see a psychiatrist who ultimately asked my mother why I was brought in because I did not need to be there, also ended up in pretty heavy social isolation from that point onward.

If I went out around town, 90% of the people I used to hang out with would freak out, so I started spending all my time indoors gaming or hanging out on message boards. 
Annnnnnd from that point forward, spent most of my time at home -- moved to a new city and a new school to finish out high school, but people caught wind of what happened previously and I was pretty quickly outcast.

So my gaming addiction was both in response to social issues growing up, but also exacerbated a number of the social issues into my adult years due to a slowly formulated general misanthropic view of people.

Arguably my internet addiction has been worse than my gaming addiction though -- spent a good 7+ years of my adult life not gaming during/after University, but have never managed to peel myself away from socializing in forums rather than in person.
Not that it is easy for me to get anywhere from where I live at the moment though.
