why are all the asylums abandoned? there's one right here in miami along Krome avenue out torwards the everglades... west miami... right before it turns into US 41 and goes to fort lauderdale or naples. we used to go there and get crunked up all the time till the place got heated.

I used to live right where kendal turned into krome near the place they were trying to build the federal building. ive never seen an asylum out there let alone heard of one

uhh there's an abandoned aslyum. you used to live way the fuck out on kendall drive and krome? there's no housing projects out there. if you didn't know about it you probably weren't involved in the local scene.. we used to throw shows out there and shit with generators...

my last band had their second to last show there back in the day

Up until the 1940's all people that were mentally ill, mentally retarded, or physically disabled were considered to be polluting the gene pool; so they were shipped to mental institutions where they were kept, not helped. Hundreds of thousands of them. In the 1960's was when things changed for good, and I guess most of the mental institutions were just shut down, very quickly too.

I didn't realize just how many of these abandoned asylums there were until I was reading this thread.

In my town we have had one since the 1890's.. It's full of ghost story's, abondoned buidlings and all sorts of story's of crazy wierdness. It used to be a huge plantation where they put the mental ill to work on their farms or chopped their brains into hunks if they didn't listen.

There is a huge stream of tunnels under our entire town that all start at that place, it's pretty fucking wierd. They go to the high school, the old city hall, the court house and one of the oldest apartment complexes in the town.

I guess they performed all kinds of 'drug' research up there and labotamy's and bad stuff like that. There is a huge very spooky grave yard back in it's old farm land, all the tombs are marked with small granite hunks with numbers on them.

No point real point here so ......
