second commandment
    #2415403 - 03/10/04 04:02 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

can you explain to me the 2nd commandment. i dont really get it. ones not supposed to make images-any likeness of anything in heaven, earth or in the depths of waters? why?

is it just because he doesnt want us worshipping them, like idols.
is he speaking of idols when he says this?
just because i have an image of something, why would that assume idol worship?

If you create an image of something, you remove the given from the context it was in, deforming the pure perception into subjective perception. Say you carve a statue of a 'dolphin god'. The likeness wouldn't be the given dolphin, because it can't swim, can't produce high-pitched noises, etc; but not only that, you generalise and personalise the dolphin, and recreate the dolphin from scratch, basing it on your personal perception.
The second commandment in a spiritual context means you can't make idols of any gods whatsoever, including IHVH, because God cannot be fathomed. God works in mysterious ways, and one should not try to ascribe a personality to God, because his true intentions cannot be known.

Christianity, I think, has taken much more liberties with that commandment than either Judaism or Islam. In those two religions, people are absolutely forbidden from making images of God. The Sistine Chapel would be considered an abomination by those two religions. I've heard the Catholic church, as well as many other churches, have interpreted the "false gods" to mean things like materialism or other pursuits which distract us from God.

Dude, that's what 1566-67 was all about ! Protestant militants tearing down all statues and paintings of saints, Mary, Jesus, God, whatnot. It's a fact the catholic church has taken that commandment in more leniently.
