Beautiful Pasty Plate Mushroom Growth/Care in Storing & Cloning Pasty Plate Lil Mushroom Fruits?
    #24081330 -

Hi,
I'm quite excited to have seen my first mushroom growth ever as a Newb! It happened in some Pasty Plates that I did transfers in and let sit around.

Pasty Plate 1:

Pasty Plate 2:

I'd like to take some clones of these little fruits, however I don't have the space to quite do it now, maybe in a few weeks though .. or a few days if you strongly advise that I hurry to make cloning work.

• What is the best way to store one of these little fruits for future cloning? Pluck and then put in a ziplock and then in the freezer? Or?

• I was eyeing the crazy tall growers for cloning, though I don't know if I should be concerned about their genetics because of the thin stems? Also, could it be problematic getting tissue from within such a thin stem to clone?

• The veil hasn't broken on them yet. Is it important to try to pick and store it before the veils break?

• The other plate has a mushroom that had its veil break and spores dropped, is it now a more contam problematic specimen to clone?

• Not captured in the photo of the developed mushroom head and veil is that the base of them stem is covered in crazy long crystal like white hairs; is that stuff more valuable to clone from?

Thank you in advance!

Best Regards and big thanks to Pasty Whyte and his agar recipe and tek!

The best way is to clone them when they are pins, just simply pick up the pin and bring it to another plate. Place it there whole. Never store fruits to clone them later, always clone fruits as soon as possible after picking.

The thin stems are because of environmental stuff, not because of genetics. (probably) There is no need to get tissue from inside their stem because the environment they were grown in should be sterile. Simply cut off the stem base and bring it to another plate.

Yes. If the veil breaks you get spores all over the tissue and the plate and your clone may be unsuccessful.

This is just mycelium. Should contain roughly the same genetics as the fruit body in this case.

when I get pins on plates to clone them I just put the whole pin on a new plate. There's no reason to try to take inner stem tissue for plate clones.

for a clone of a mushroom grown in a fruiting chamber you'll want to take an inner stem biopsy

I save pins, peices of stems etc for later culturing all the time. Like u said don't always have the time or resources to start new plates right away.
I've been told others also do this, I guess its an older method...idk.
I put them in a new pp5 container in a sterile manner as possible... Basically just like I would any transfer. They will dry out and turn very small.

I'm just saying what I do, and it works. But I'm new to this too so...if someone could enlighten to the reason I shouldn't i would be more than willing to hear them out.

amazon has cases of petri dishes for like 80-100 dollars usually works out to less than 20 cents a plate. I usually do a couple sleeves at a time, germinate two or three varities on 5-8 plates save extra plates for subsequent transfers.

Thank you for the information.

This might be a dumb question, but I'm curious what would happen if one just simply transferred an agar pin to a jar of grains? or what about doing the same with mini agar fruits like I have?

I just saw the following quote from Roger Rabbit which made me wonder the question:

"Transferring pins from one petri dish to another is redundant.  It also isn't cloning, but just transferring.  Use that dish (with pins in it) to inoculate grains if you want to test the strain. RR"

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/14731236

Though the quote overlooks the importance of isolating your pin from potential contamination.

If your pin is clean, mycelium would grow and colonise the grains. Otherwise, it would contaminate. In nature, the fruit bodies only purpose is to spread spores and then rot back into mycelium.
