hmmm :takingnotes: I might have to bust out my extra lids so I can convert to filterless, and ditch the ones with the holes in 'em.

Also Munch, how long have you been doing this?

I prefer the filters, I tried Munchs upside down unmodded and it just.. Doesn't feel right. Tried pp5s unmodded too and untightening then tightening to shake and then having to remember to unscrew again for GE, I left them tight for a whole week not realizing, 4 of them contamed out with some bacteria. I just rather have filters and not have to worry about fucking up like that again. Also if you shake a pp5 without tightening it... Boom. Grains everywhere.

I'll tell you what doesn't feel right to me...

doing tasks that are unnecessary and waste my time, like making filter lids! if they aren't necessary and add no real benefit, wtf are you making them for? tradition? nostalgia?

best part of unmodded lids is no more foil wraps!

I just said why, cause I don't like that I can fuck up with the tight/untight. Cause I do stupid shit like that all the time. Filters make it easier like that

yeah but those are just silly mistakes you make one time then you remember to check that shit from henceforth. improve your techniques to work with better tools, and don't rely on crutches. just my philosphy.

plus you can cook with modded lids which makes them about 100x more useful. I'm having braised ribs tonight that were on sale. :crazy2:

Hey,

I ended up using a SGFC but the results weren't that good. I was still pretty confused why a fish tank wouldn't work so I did some digging and found that it would work well if a pinning strategy was used along with a temperature gradient. So turn off the water heater during the day and dial in the air so that dripping down the side of the walls doesn't occur.

I was using an aquarium 10 years ago. Had a bubbler pump and heater in container of water. I also kept an ac in the room pointed toward chamber. Worked really well  at the time. Big fruits and plenty of them.

sgfc are for cakes. those are trays. IME trays do better then cakes.

dont use a fish heater. thats ancient. sure you CAN use a fishtank.. but why
when a mono tub is 6bux and doesnt weigh a ton. plus you can modify a tub.

fishtanks are for fish.

EDIT: those are not trays, those are noobish grow kits taken out
of the 'kit' and it appears to be perlite on the kits as well..

Seriously... stop trying so hard to get the fish tank to work well and just get good at growing.  You can't expect to make a non-standard fruiting chamber work well without the experience of growing properly, and having taken the time to refine your ability to read the mycelium and understand its needs.

We focus on cookie cutter one size fits all solutions to noobs because anybody who can get a fishtank to work well as a fruiting chamber has probably seen enough failures and successes to know exactly how to dial in for their growing environment, and they don't need advice about it, so self esteem issues aside, they wouldn't even be asking.  That doesn't mean they'll know how to dial in for yours though.  Again, why we recommend the simple tub setups.  They can't be the source of the failure if used properly.  Your grow was not so great.  Not the SGFC's grow.  Take ownership, do better next time.

A fish tank could have to be under any variation of radical conditions to get to work right.  If you'll take some random dudes advice about how he got a fish tank to work, why not take the dozens or maybe hundreds of random dudes advice to just go with something that works all the time.  Nobody wants to help anybody here troubleshoot a fish tank grow.  And we usually don't, if anybody grows in a fish tank and it's good, then they must know how to grow.  They probably did it on their own and by using the same principles used for the other fruiting chambers.

But if you have to ask..  then you don't know enough yet that you should bother.  Don't run before you walk.  Don't try to learn PHP before you can type.  If you're going to run with scissors, at least master lightly jogging with scissors first.  Is any of this making sense?  Why is this thread back?  How did I get here?  Why are you all doing this to me?  :shakefist:

Lucky me my fish tank broke some time ago. Wish I had of known that fish tanks would not work back when I was using it all the time. Ok I'm done I won't mention fish tank ever again on this site.

A fish tank can be a great tool for learning. If a newbie uses one, they will learn how to dial in and learn more about the relationship between the various pinning triggers.

Using a tote suggests that it's easy and people skip consolidation and simply put the cake/tray/whatever (it's all mycelium) into the tote with all of the holes free. What if they put the tote right next to the windy window, where too much air is flowing through the holes, causing bluing or contamination?

If you must teach to use a tote, then would it be a good idea to tell them to tape up all the holes to begin with and to free the taped holes one by one after consolidation has finished?

:whatwhatwhat: :lolwut:

Nothing you suggested there is recommend in any decent tek or by any decent cultivator. If some noob goes; "well since I'm using a proper fruiting chamber I'm not going to bother to consolidate my cakes, I'm gonna stick em by an open window, and I'm going to mist them with urine. Cause when I follow one part of a tek I make sure to fuck everything else up hard" :smirk:

:justno:

first of all, most every tek does say to tape the holes during the spawn run.

secondly, consolidation isn't whats happening, colonization is. we do not consolidate spawn or bulk substrates

even if you don't tape the holes up, contamination doesn't happen because of air. when you put the spawn and substrate in the tub it's exposed to air. besides the lids are not a perfect seal. you are not keeping contamination out at this point of the grow, it simply will not contaminate if it's healthy to begin with, the mycelum can handle itself once you get past the spawn stage. this is why we can mix our spawn and substrate with our bare hands.

some people put their tubs into fruiting conditions immediately. the mycelum will still fully colonize the substrate before deciding to fruit. some people claim this shaves a few days off the process.
