Gray Oysters on Sterilized Corn Cob Pellets
    #23460390 -

So I couldn't find much info, other than a post or two by RR saying that corn cobs will work. I'm still unable to get cheap wood pellets until winter.  I will do some experimenting and post here once I get my 55 gallon steam sterilizer up and running (thanks for the video Gr0wer!). You guys have any thoughts or anyone done this? I imagine I could supplement like sawdust. Here's the cob pellets I'm looking at

Yes you can use the corn cob to make your sub more airy or fluff it up. Oysters can grow on them straight but not super well . only tired once with them straight.

I'm looking to do Shiitake in the same chamber. Straw will contaminate with the high RH. Also, straw is messy snd a pain, so the more I can switch to a sterilized sub, the better. And it's hard to find good sawdust in Florida. That's why I'm wondering about corn. I'll be picking some up in the next week and trying it out.

Just an update.
I've just inoculated a 6 lb block of supplemented Corn Cob pellets with 3015 Gray Oyster spawn. Last night while I was making the sub, I was very surprised to see how much this stuff expanded. It costs twice as much as fuel pellets, but when wet, it expands to almost twice as much as substrate as a similar amount of fuel pellets would. This bag has rice bran and alfalfa supplements. I'll update as it goes, whether it fails or succeeds.

Dude I read in GGMM that there was evidence that oyster mushrooms grown on corn cobs could prevent tumors, lol, I know Stamets reputation for claims but I don't think that study was from him.
Anyways, following this thread:thumbup:

Cool!  I'm curious as to how the alfalfa/rice bran combo works.  I'm using alfalfa to supplement straw and wheat bran to supplement sawdust bags and might try a combo on sawdust if your results are promising. Also, have you tried sourcing sugarcane and peanut/soy bean byproducts?  I think Florida grows a lot of those things.

I have not tried to source peanut or sugarcane. No one seems to have soybean anything. I'll have to see what we have for growers of those around here. It seems like nobody grows anything near me. Lol

As for the corn cob, the mycelium is tearing it up. I did put a full jars worth of spawn in it, but it's really moving along. Ill post a pic when I go to fruit it. I've not heard about the preventing tumors study but that's pretty interesting!

The sugars help but the recipes is simple. Mix 2 40lb bales of straw ground/ cut with 60lbs of corn cob. Soak in water tub for 20 hours. Drain and rise off. Make it look clean. Pasturation for 1.5 hours. Mix with 1 to 8 spawn mix. Bag it in plastic bag. I use gallon size bread bags. Poke hole to have air and drain over the next day.

Can you clarify ? Are we talking a 1:8 part spawn ratio?

That would be 12.5% spawn which seems more than ample.  I've been spawning at 10% which seems like overkill.  I was just sitting here thinking I need to back it down to 5% for better utilization of spawn.  Especially considering that we're supplementing.

My thoughts exactly.... high spawn ratios are great if your just having fun but commercial production is a whole other ballgame and  spawning at anything more than 8% is time and money down the drain.

I know I used roughly 10% and it was more than ample. I'll probably do 5% on my next one.

Updating as promised. This is going into the fruiting chamber today. The bag colonized very quickly, but I waited a few extra days as there was one corner that was very slow, I don't know if it was extra compacted or what. The corn cob does seem to compact easily if you aren't too careful. Let's see how well it fruits!

I was colonizing at 1:8 with my straw logs, unless short on spawn. many have noted a reduced yield with oysters when less spawn is used - mushroom adventures on youtube explains in a few videos. cool experimenting though!
