    #4542478 -

I just read about this for the first time in the news forum and am intrigued. Does anyone have experience with it?

I like the taste it is somewhat sweet corny taste that stays with you after you eat it. A neighbor grew the variety Golden Bantam in a wet place and about
half the ears turned up with smut. Turns out Golden Bantam is a real good
host for Corn Smut especially during wet years or if you grow it in a wet place.

Is the corn ruined by the smut or is it still good? Does the smut just scrape off?

The smut grows inside the kernels and they grow very large and misshapen.
The corn cobs don't look like corn cobs any more. The plant stays
pretty much the same. Ive been told, Mexico they eat the immature smut and also when it matures they use the spores in food like soups and sauces.

I grew Ustilago maydis by injecting spore suspension with a syringe into small corn plantlets. Unfortunately I didn't get to taste them as I found them too late and they were already sporulating.
