Thats a nice price if the seedlings are good quality, checkout www.garlandtruffles.com He gives discounts on quantity and I think they start at $16 per innoculated tree. I believe he sells balck diamond trufffles on both both oak and walnut. I need to look into it more but from what I know your looking at a 7 year minimum commitment. I'm supprised this post hasn't got more replies I really wanted to learn more about the truffle experience. If you find out anything really helpfull I would like to hear more thanks....

Yeah, I've heard as soon as five years, but 6 or 7 is the average...Hey, it's better than trying to find the little fungers in any case!

Hey, look at it this way...in 5-7 years you could make a steady income just with a few trees! If I hear anything of note I will be sure to pass it along..

I'd like to start by saying that I know absolutly nothing about truffle cultivation, but I have always been intrigued by the cult following that they seem to have.

Additionally, I've never tasted one of the damned things either... so I have no clue what Im missing.

Anyhow, the folks at garlandtruffle.com are recommending 500 trees per acre. Not only is that a hellashush initial expense on a risky project such as this, but thats a TON of trees to be cramming into such a small space.

Any thoughts?

Oh, btw, Im only about 100 miles away from that truffle farm in NC... I may pay em a visit in the next few weeks.

Happy Trails,
DrWild

I too am close to that farm. Rumor has it Emeril Lagasse' David Lettereman and other celebs want to talk with this guy. I don't think we would be planting 500 trees anytime soon, we don't have the land or the need for all that. We were thinking maybe 20 trees or so. I't does sound like alot of trees per acre but you know oaks like to grow straight up maybe that has something to do with it, not sure. A visit to the farm would be quite interesting, maybe you could even taste your first trufflle, he was also a major shittake grower in the area also. The trufflle isn't my favorite mushroom but it's the hobby that would drive me to wait 7 years for a mushroom, you know???
I you take a ride out there I would relly like to hear from you

They grow underground near the roots of a host tree usually oak or walnut. I don't think the truffle would care too much about the type of soil, but my guess is they would like near neutral or slightly acidic soil since thats what oak and walnut trees seem to like..Anyone?

Even if you didn't care to eat them...the prospect of $200-$400 per pound may entice you to try them

Don't you think that price will decrease over time?

Nope, truffles have been a delicasy for a long time..They actually train pigs to sniff them out (and pigs LOVE truffles) they are so hard to find...

So you don't think all the folks planting their $15 trees now will affect future prices??

It's an obscure market...just like cultivating psychoactive shrooms, but to a much smaller degree.

People have little enough patience to wait 30 days for their harvest, let alone 5-10 years...

We'll have to wait & see. I'm not predicting McTruffles, but all things are relative.

My initial thought was the more availablity the cheaper prices, but we are talking very long term and lack of land to grow on, then factor in growing popularity and demand. I don't think truffle prices will fall anytime soon. I actually think you will see a growing popularity in truffles over a period of time. The prices may climb as people become aware of the "Popular" mushrooms everyone is talking about...........
