$35k for a single truffle. Okay, maybe I'm interested in cultivating truffles now ;-)

my favorite way to eat truffles is with "polenta", an iTalian cornbread of sorts. then with freshly made pasta, but you can really grate truffles on almost any of your favorite foods (other then sweets and desserts). of course, no truffles in the world are better than the white truffles from alba, piedmont, italy. this year the production is to dye for. had some last week. price of these is an incentive to find a way to grow the, cost about 5k per kg last time i checked, if i'm not mistaken

not necessarily. the french black is crap to me, but not the italianblack from norcia, central italy. although it is (10 times?) cheaper than the italian white, it can be almost as good, particularly when prepared, as they do locally, with fresh goat cheese

I know that Oregon white truffles can be found for sale in San Francisco markets....and I'd bet money they'll turn up in Seattle markets too. I'm not sure what the harvest season is for them....I'm guessing September/October....but it could be all the way through to December I guess.

If you're looking to buy mailorder, maybe Google will turn up something?

the two truffles known to grow in oregon that have marketability are tuber gibbosum (the oregon white truffle) and Leucangium carthusiana, considered to be THE Oregon Black Truffle.

what trees do the wild growing truffles develope their symbiotic relationship with?

i've read that hazlenut and oak trees are the best trees for the most productive growth and most desired taste. and each of those two trees experimenters have developed two different strategies altogether... in a well run farm both should be planted/used in the operation... there may be others... thats why i ask what tree's are able to establish this in the wild?

just because this hasn't been widely attempted dosen't mean it can't be done... the people who are doing it are making huge money... this fungus is sold by the gram... i really believe this is very doable if all involved are very focused...

Sounds an awful lot like the illegal substance industry.
