truffles

is it possible to grow truffles indoors? i know they grow underground....and i figure if it was resonably easy more people would do it for the $$. so, i suppose the real question is, what makes them so extremely tough to grow indoors?

You can grow the tree from seeds impregned in truffle spores indoors, but after about 2 years and if the mycorrizae did form the tree must be transfered outside. That?s the way we do it here in Spain. The whole process indoors? NO WAY

Yes, it?s risky but we are having good results here. It can?t be compared to the success you get when inoculating some jars with P.C. spores, but is worth the try.

they've had somewhat moderate success growing domestic truffles in Washington state, though they don't have the same flavor, size or aroma as their european counterpart.

Tuber melanosporum (T. nigrum) or commonly known as black truffle.
Success?= every effort that makes worth the try.
We have here in Spain some companies that sell small truffle trees with the micorrizae formed (live oak? encina in spanish). Growers plant about 300-350 little trees.

You mean T. magnatum or the Piamonte truffle ? I think the whites grow exclusively in Italy (Piamonte and Emilia), but I?m not 100% sure.

also called the white alba truffle, yes predominantly in italy but some regions in France also produce (albeit much lower yield) them.

There are getting to be a ton of places that produce innoculated trees for truffle cultivation.

This place is the first one that turns up with a Google search.

I won a couple trees from this place at the NAMA convention in 1997.

One of my trees (hazelnut) died, and I haven't seen anything like truffles from the other yet, but that doesn't mean it won't produce eventually. Prices from these places for trees aren't that drastically different from the prices for regular trees, so it's worth a try. Just limit yourself to getting trees you would have gotten anyway. That way you don't end up with a bunch of trees you don't really want if they end up not producing.

Keep this in mind when buying trees: trees thrive best when planted in the soil they grew up in. What do I mean by this? Well, ideally, you buy a tree that was grown as close to your home as possible. It will have less problems adapting to its new home.
In this case, it won't be possible for most of us to step out of the frontdoor and buying a 'truffle-tree' at the neighbours'. So try to figure out on what kind of soil in what kind of conditions the trees you intend to buy were grown, and compare these conditions with the conditions of the spot you intend to plant them. This will increase your chances of the trees successfully adapting to their new home.

With the trees I got I didn't have any options as to the kind of tree.

On the other hand, hazelnuts grow wild here, so there shouldn't be any issues with incompatible plants. The biggest problem here has been the drought. Last year we had the lowest rainfall for the year ever recorded.

I'm not talking about species here. I'm talking about soil and general conditions. Does the pH of the soil the tree was grown in match the pH of the soil it will be planted in? Was the tree grown in clay, sand or turfy soil? That's the sort of think you want to keep an eye on. The better those parameters match, the more successfully the trees will adapt to their new environment.

Exactly, that?s why not all the hazelnuts, live oak... you see around produce truffles. Soil conditions and drainage are very, very important.
