Personally, I'd never buy from this guy, but I thought this was pretty interesting.. .

http://www.sporetradingpost.com/truffle_trees.htm

The link isn't working now for some reason.

Who knows if they are what he says they are, if he really does the level of quality control he claims. Anyone who wants 90$ for ANY cubensis syringe is shady at best. And how can you prove that the trees are what he claims they are?

Anyway, there are probably better sources out there for the actual cultures.

You could buy a fresh truffle and wait until it matures and the inside turns black from spores. Mix the spores with sterile soil and plant oak acorns in it.

And then sell the inoculated seedlings to wannabe truffle growing millionaries.

Now that's a great idea!  I'm going to Italy next month, I wonder if any fresh ones will be available.  Probably not :frown:
Apparantly truffles do not take to culture very well.  It doesn't sound like the kind of thing you can just grow on PDA like other gourmets. . .

It's not hard to get spores in season, they throw many away because they're overmatured.
What part of Italy are you going to?

Rome, Florence, then toward the base of the alps. Really looking forward to it.

If you get a pre-sporulating truffle, will it mature over time? Spores would be nice to have.

absolutely yes, old friend, i get them fresh most of the year here in nyc (white alba). very good season this year, which has lowered the retail price here to about $1,000 per pound, somewhat lower (but not that much, transportation is not a significant factor) if you go directly to source in piedmont completely different (cheaper and affordable) is the black summer truffle from central italy, although much more seasonal. pastes and oils are sometimes even better as fresh fro cooking

forget cultivation efforts, if you get some eat it and make sure its prepared by somebody who knows what his doing (from a gastronomical point of view).

I assume so, but don't know for sure. A truffle hunter said once to me that he finds many overmature truffles that are not edible anymore and are used for dog training. I'll try to get some.
