Yes, most people have heard of truffles. And they generally have "truffle pigs" harvest them. Why are you just now hearing about these things?

Geko did you see the price of these things?
Quote:
500-1000 Euros per kg, about 225-550 USD per pound
Apparently the world-wide demand for truffles is 50x that of supply.
"Farming" them has become a popular idea down here in NZ.

Geko is thinking of farming them aswell, There worth a fucking fortune $$$$$$$$
And to Lily_Morgan , Yes Geko has only just heard about them. And truffle pigs hey, LMOL, Geko can just picture some fucken copper digging around in the dirt.
How's what them fucking things are worth, HOLY FUCKING SHIT.$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Besides the way comersial growers grow them, There must be a better way than inoculating some dam tree then waiting a whole fucking year for it to fully colanise and establish its self on the roots of the tree.
What about wood loving species like Ps Subaerginosa, Dose any shroomer think that the method for growing them could be applied the truffles, Because there obiusly a wood loving species if there growing off of tree roots.
Were's Bluemeanie when ya need him, He know fucking everything about shrooms and fungus and if dosent he knows some shroomer that dose. Help us out hear Bluemeanie please, You know you da man, When it comes to extinsive research on a certin spicies.
And has anyone had any hands on experince with truffles at all ????????.

Yeah it takes five years for inoculated trees to produce harvestable fruit. They dont like hard freezes. The cultivated species don't go for 300 to 500 a pound. Maybe 200. Lets just say you wont be paying your morgage growing them. But it could be a nice supplemental income. The gound has to be loose around the trees. Then you have to dig them up. Digging up around an acre of trees would be some work.
My buddies out west hunt the winter and spring blacks and whites. They find like two pounds in 4 hours. In certain woods. Using clam rakes digging around the trees. I tell them that they should get a dog trained to find brie cheese...........

Geko is over 30 and has never heard about Matsutake, Sounds like a sex toy or something. But getting back on topic, Truffles in OZ are sooo fucking expensive.
They would be a good investment like wine vinyards to get established for when geko is an old fart. But still there most be other ways to grow them with out the dam trees.

Trees have to be living, hence the symbiotic part of the relationship between truffle and tree. It's the only way it's done.
There are truffle farms in tazmania.
The trees produce truffles for 30 years too.

A fellow Shroomery member holding a black truffle he got from his job, not well stored and spoiled. I got a piece but my mother inlaw tossed it "since it was molded" so i failed to culture it.

They're like amanita muscaria - you need to have living trees to grow them. They use the root cells themselves and form a symbiosis. You can't just grow them in a petri, sadly

People have actually been able to grow truffles in culture (I believe), but they tasted horrible, so not much use.
