It may look like a button mushroom right now, but wait until you see how it grows!

They are calling them truffles, but I am curious what makes a truffle exactly. I was under the impression that truffles were ascomycetes. Are they really sclerotia? They do look superficially similar. Hmmm, must consult my books.

So I guess truffle refers to a sexual fungal structure that remains underground being and ascomycete or basidiomycete is not a defining feature

Yes truffle is used as a general name for all mushrooms that form spores underground. Many agarics orders have also gastroid (underground) species that are usually found in arid & extreme conditions. So far such "truffle" species have been found for Coprinus, Agaricus, Russula, Lactarius & others (including Psilocybe - there is a species called "gastroid liberty cap").
This article is describing a discovery of gastroid Amanita.

as far as them being "truffles", the word does get a bit of loose usage.  amongst the experts in hypogeous fungi that i have met, the term truffle seems to be used almost indiscriminantly to refer to underground specimens without clearly defined features.  that would include all gastroid forms, all "true" truffles (tuber) and many other genera of fungi that fruit entirely (or almost entirely) underground. endogone martellia, melanogaster  and elaphomyces are just a few of the tuber-like genera all referred to as truffles.
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, truffles.

The gastroid liberty cap: Weraroa cucullata
Hmmm. It's not underground species. Its spores are forming inside and are not released, that's why its gastroid.
