Truffles?

Has anybody ever heard of successful cultivation of truffles or is it as impossible as Liberty Caps?

If anyone can figure out how to cultivate truffles they are selling at $1,000.00 per pound right now, something to think about!!!

truffles are bad ass and nearly impossible to grow. there are some really cool sites about them though.. i can't remember where i read about them but they rock. this has nothing to do w/ anything but i saw lord of the rings last night and that also rocked .. though there were no visible truffles in the movie.

y do think that this post belongs in edible and medicinal mushrooms? while this has to do with the cultivation of an edible, it still has to do with cultivation.

Actually, there are nurseries around the U.S. that sell Philbert trees and other types inoculated with truffle spawn. You can order as many as you want, but you need at least a few trees to form the mycelial network necessary for the truffles to form. It takes five years, according to some nurseries.

Oh yeah -- also, many who sell those trees run truffle co-ops, so you must sell any harvests through them. That can be a drawback, or not.
