Corn Smut

found about 5 lbs of corn smut growing on our sweet corn today.  Gonna cook it up and see how it tastes.  If it's good, I'll get some into culture tomorrow (if possible). :smile:

It's my understanding that corn smut requires a living host, and will not grow on agar.  You could prove me wrong, though!

I've heard of two different propagation methods for this.  First is cutting a seedling with a spore-covered knife blade.  The other involves injecting a spore solution into each corn cob once the tassles appear.  I have a big dried out fruit that's loaded with spores at the moment, and I may end up infecting my corn once its started cobbing up.

I actually got mine by asking at my local farmer's market.  A farmer had some to show some chef, but she'd waited too long to harvest them so many were black with spores.  She just gave me one!

It's a pretty big problem in my area right now.  It grows best under drought conditions when corn is stressed.

You can culture corn smut on plain ole MEA or PDA. An agar suited for yeast would be better though.

It still requires a corn plant to produce the actual fruit bodies though.

So if you had a living culture growing on agar, how would you use it to inoculate a corn plant?  The low tech spore method seems to work well enough, even if it's labor intensive.  This is a vigorous plant disease, after all.

I'd imagine injecting a liquid culture into corn cobs would work.

There are other reasons to culture things other than to grow them right away. I'd personally would like to see the microscopic morphological changes that happen when its placed on agar.

Corn smut is used as a model organism. It has a lot in common with morels.

It may be just as easy to slice the corn stalk near it's base and squirt the wound with spore water. Keep in mind that these spores will infect a field for 2-3 years, laying dormant and then infecting live plants.

Keep in mind that certain corn is resistant to smut.
