substrate minitrials -- Pleurotus on whole corn

The mycobag R & D dept and the Sporeworks Edibles Division have been conducting minitrials to test various strains of edibles on some of the more uncommon substrates. This minitrial was testing the fruiting ability of various Pleurotus strains growing on whole corn.

Spawn run was lightening fast. Mycelium really seems to like the corn. Mycelium was observed to be a bit more 'robust' than we are used to seeing on WBS for example.

Fruiting was a bit of a disappointment. All strains used except for Pl cornicopiae would not fruit. Rather they formed puffy growths at the bag puncture holes, this in a minigreenhouse that was producing perfect Agrocybe Aegerita flushes (the environment is tweaked).

The yellow oyster produced very large fruitbody clusters. it was the only strain if Pleurotus that we found to fruit well on whole corn.

The consensus is that corn is excellent for spawn production, but doesnt work very well as the sole component in an end stage production block, unless one is growing yellow oysters.

I think mycobag has also grown reishi on corn.

yes your right he had grown G lucidum on corn.  They looked great!

It's my understaning that his G. lucidum growths didn't really mature out, that is they just stayed as "blobs" of mushroom mass forming from the sides of the substrate.

Thanks for the info mycena! Im in the process of acquring a culture of Pl enyngii now, ill try it soon.

I also have A aegerita promordia on corn, but have yet to complete a fruiting, updates to come.

I tried A aegerita on cracked corn a while back, and got nothing but a green casing.
