Shiitake and Agrocybe Aegerita Plans
    #4749709 - 10/03/05 04:37 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

So.. here's the idea

I was planning on ordering 2 kits of each of these mushrooms.. just to see if I can get them to fruit. If they do fruit in my conditions and setup, then I will take prints and make my own substrate the next time through  So my temperatures are between 70-76 and humidity can be up to 100% if needed.

Both of these species, according to sporeworks are to be colonized between 68-78F.. So I figure my room temperature is fine for incubating/colonizing.

What I would do is make my fruiting chamber light tight until the bags were fully colonized. Once they are colonized I was thinking I would cold shock them in a bin with cool/ice water for a day or two. Then.. put them back into the 70-76F environment/fruiting chamber. I would mist the side of the incubation case during colonization so the kit doesn't dry out again. The fruiting chamber will be placed near a window for natural light, but not intense direct light. Do you think that I will be able to get both the shiitake and agrocybe aegerita to fruit? My last attempt failed.. the substrate didn't even colonize, due to a poor incubation chamber which I believe was not light tight nor humid enough.

So basically.. would they fruit at the same temperature that they were colonized at... if I cold shocked them for a couple of days?

Thanks for any help

For both shiitake and Agrocybe you don?t need light during incubation. Keeping the humidity high is a good idea to maintain the moisture of the substrate. Yes, room temperature is fine for incubating/colonizing.

To initiate fruiting Agrocybe needs cooler temperatures to initiate fruiting: 50-60* F (10-16* C) for 7 to 14 days, after that you can place them in the 70-76F environment/fruiting chamber. Of course this is strain dependent. But this is how I do it:

I have a strain that consistently fruits when I place substrate bags in the fridge or outside (when it is cold enough). After that prolonged cold shock I place the bags in the humid and warm fruiting chamber 70-76F and 95% relative humidity.

After that these babies will pop up within a few days:

I never dunk substrate blocs with Agrocybe since it seems to stall or inhibit fruiting. Therefore it is important to prevent the blocs from drying out during incubation (high rel. humidity) and to prepare large blocs (5 lbs) because they have larger reserve of moisture.

Printing can be done easily with this species. They produce chocolate brown spores.

For eating: the younger ones taste the best.

Shiitake also needs cool temperatures to initiate fruiting, depending on the strain. Check out the growth parameters here: http://www.sacredshrooms.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/2092857/an/0/page/1#2092857

Good luck.

Thanks very much my friend. That was a very useful post  I have one question.. just so I don't wreck anything if I can get them to colonize this time around.

You mention using the fridge for cold shocking. Well, the fridge that I would use is more than likely below the 50 - 60 F range.. Could temperatures in a fridge be too cold for cold shocking?

No the temperatures are not too cold. The temperature in my fridge is more around 40 F and works well for the strains I have. When I have a full fridge I use a cooler with some ice packs or a frozen water bottle for cold shocking. By experimenting a bit with the amount of ice you could get it to the 50-60 range (if the cooler cold shock doesn't work).
