Howdie folks,
Usually we grow our Agrocybe aegerita in the office on the Small Wood-Based MycoBag(TM), but we decided to try a few rounds using the new Large Wood-Based MycoBag(TM).
The bag was injected with culture and incubated at room temp (around 72F). When completely colonized we allowed for primordia to form invitro before removing the upper bag material and placing the block in our ghetto chamber setup. Fruiting continued to develop at room temperature.
Pictures below show the block prior to harvest. We allowed the fruits to mature beyond what is normal for harvest because we wanted to secure some spore samples to add to our Microscopy lineup. Usually these would have been picked a bit sooner.
Tastey looking huh!?!?

Both Sporeworks and MycoBag offer Agrocybe Aegerita Kits based on the small Wood Bag. These are very easy to work with for even the complete novice, so if you are thinking about giving these a try I would highly recommend it!
Plans are to plant the spent block in an outdoor mulch bed to see if we can get some additional fruiting in what is left of Spring, or maybe even in the Fall.

Not sure what you mean by "plain edibles." If you are referring to the "Button Mushroom" which is most common at most markets, then no, this is a completely different animal.
Agrocybe aegerita is a choice edible that has shown to have some medicinal properties as well. It's flavor isn't really pronounced, but some people like a "blander" mushroom. It soaks up flavoring and spices well and the meaty stalk gives it a fair bit of substance in the meal.
I'm always blown away at how "cubensis-like" these mushrooms are, down to the viel and caps .

I would agree its got a quite subtle flavour and it fruits readily off MEA alone, so its a goer. Ive had trouble with outdoor beds for this mushroom though, so indoors might be more practicle?

For what its worth this is the favorite mushroom in the Millet household. We have oysters of every size and color and when its time to fill the mini green the missus always says 'get them agrocybes going baby'.
She rubs her legs like a cricket upon finish of her request, who am I to retort?

best regards,
